Getting the Wheeling Fever
Howdy folks.
Quick question: Does the oil pan need to be dropped to remove the front case? I've got all of the bolts removed, including the oil-pan bolts that screw into the bottom of the case. But something still seems to be preventing me from pulling the case. Oil-pan is not dropped.

Did you also remove the two bolts that come in from the head?

Yes. I guess I should have mentioned that the entire head is off.
Also since this photo was taken, the crank pulley has been removed.

just try giving it a little tap with a rubber mallet or a gentle pry, it should come right off with the pan on there, the head being off makes it infinitly easier

It may end up tearing the oil pan gasket. I give it a 50-50%.

There are aliment pins so make sure you remove it at a equal time on each side. It can be pretty hard to get off sometimes, good luck!

Well. Ended up tearing the gasket as it seems there was RTV on both sides of it. Looks like I'll be dropping the oil pan. Did I read somewhere the front diff has to be dropped to get the oil pan out? Really hoping not to have to do that, but if it comes down to it I will. All this to replace an oil pump!

no need to drop front diff.
just undo the cross-member its a funny angle to put in and out
and a bit tricky with new oil pan gasket but it is do able.

so you have the head off good time to have it resurfaced if needed and replace vavle stem and jet vavle seals
and alway good to check and make sure exhaust manifold is straight. they like to warp and is hell to get them to seal and not blow exhaust gasket.
of course there are numerous other things that could be done.
new silent shaft chain and gears and guides .
but then it all depends on what you have done already and how everything looks
