So I finally finished my in fender snorkel and air box project. I was in Florence earlier this year heading down a whoop road to the beach ( following another truck ) and was surprised when I sank the rig up to the hood in water. Fortunately, I was able to bow wake and came out unscathed. I will not be caught off guard again with the proper equipment.

So as with any other keyboard cowboy I hit the internet in search for a snorkel kit. I found 2, made of abs plastic and reinforced fiberglass. Needless to say I was not happy with the $400 - $550 price figure and less than enthusiastic about shipping it from Australia. So as you can figure I'm like any other garage backyard mechanic and I said "I can make that, make it better, and out of metal" Creation and Install commenced later that week. I grossly underestimated the time and fabrication it would take to create this product. However, I am very please with the final results:

Body Damage is Cool
Looks good!

I'm working on my own and I know how much time it is taking....too much.

What type of tube and who bent it?

If you get water in the motor now, I don't want to be there <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Nice work!

Nice Fab work on the new airbox <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

That is an awful lot of metal taken out of the inner guard <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />.

Ae you worried at all about cracking and fatigue of the inner guard or any structural weakness through the front end now with that much metal taken out?Would it have been better to cut out a circle for the pipe work to go through with a hole saw opposed leaving a huge gap there? There is a lot of space for mud and water to flow in easily into your engine bay along with your front tyres forcing mud in with your brake and clutch reservoir very close and your MAF plug facing down. t could potentially cause issues.

All the best with it and let us know how it goes after your next few dirty excursions.

Really do like what you have done with your Sporty. Especially the bar work.

Cheers, Chris <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Thanks guys. Excellent questions here. I am replacing the fender metal this weekend. I did cut out a hole in it and missed the hole, got pissed and cut the damn thing out... LOL

The material removed will be replaced but I have no structural worries.

Everet, the tube was bent at the local exhaust shop. It's not mandral but I'm not too worries about the krinkle. The tube is 2 1/4 ID

Thanks for the props guys

With 2.25 tubing, you'll be fine! The only time you'll run into problems is at the 5000+ RPM zone. But with a 4x4 rig, that's real rare...

Word to the wise, make sure your ignition coils and wires leading to them are VERY well greased. I had a cracked coil (not even visable) and the thing ran on 2 cylinders for the whole way home...
