This is my first post!...
My brother purchased a 91 Montero a month ago and this thing is cool as can be. However, it has been a alot of trouble. Blew a head gasket and warped heads, so bad we had to get an engine from a Raider, ( all we could find ). The engine had been installed by a friend of mine who worked at the Mitsu dealership. The truck had ran great until it began randomly dieing.

I had found this post...
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...&an=0&page=0#Post1279553

In attempts to keep from hijacking his thread, I started this. I have done a bit of research here but I am not familiar with these trucks at all.

Any help would be great

cheers

Any used vehicle will have it's challenges, that's part of the fun of wrenching and modifying.
You'll find once you get some buggs worked out you'll have a vehicle to kicks all other 4wds butts.
This problem could be as simple as needing a good trottle body cleaning,,,and possibly a new Idle control servo.

Welcome and definitely follow the troubleshooting advice already given on that thread. Although your problem may be different, most the troubleshooting process will be the same. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Thank you for the warm welcome and replies. I have always liked the 1st Gen Montero's but have been infatuated with the 1st Gen Isuzu Troopers (see sig). However, I love Elliot's (my brother) Montero. When he found this rear gem, I pretty much made him buy it, and he loves it. Except for the ongoing problems it has given him. I reminded him before he bought it that I am working on my 20 year old truck a lot. If the weather holds, I am going to take a crack at some diagnostics. A guy from PlanetIsuzoo recommended this forum to me, of which I am pleased.

cheers

When I bought my first Montero, I was actually out looking for a 1st gen Trooper. Thought I saw one at the rear of the dealership lot but when we walked up to it, we discovered it wasn't a trooper. The dealership was already closed so I went back the following day and ended up buying it.

I need more info. Does it crank and run and then die? Runs how long? In what ambient temps? How does it run? Rough, smooth? How does it die? Sudden engine stop, or sputter and then stop? Is it running at speed when it dies or at idle. When running, how does it respond to opening the throttle? How does the exhaust smell as it dies? gassy or acrid?

How long did the old fuel sit in the tank? How does the tank smell at the filler neck? Have you drained any fuel and was there water in it?

Thanks Brenden!

Yes

Runs how long?

It has been different. He has started it in the driveway and has driven it for 20+ minutes and then I have started it, put it in gear and it dies before getting into second.

In what ambient temps?

I suppose it runs longer in the early mornings when he is on his way to work, mid 70's I suppose. During the day's is when I have fidgeted with the thing, and it has been upper 80's. low 90's at times, and dies quicker from start.

It runs great!

It is a sudden kill, no indications at all. It as if you turn the key off.

Quote
Is it running at speed when it dies or at idle.

At speeds, runs great when idling.

Quote
When running, how does it respond to opening the throttle?

This has been different. Sometimes it will respond to throttle as normal and on few occasions it will seem to choke when applying a little throttle vs heavy throttle.

How does the exhaust smell as it dies? gassy or acrid?

gassy

How long did the old fuel sit in the tank?

I am not convinced the truck had sat long enough for the fuel to be bad. If so, I would not know.

Quote
How does the tank smell at the filler neck?

It smells normal.

I have not noticed any water. We did swap out the fuel pump a couple weeks ago and has not changed a thing.

I really appreciate your help. Elliot had taken a trip to the Red River Gorge and took his key, so I could not do a thing to it yesterday and he is not getting home until tomorrow. So I have a bit of time to do a bit of studying.

cheers

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I am assuming you pulled and checked the ECU? Has a tendency to cook itself. You will know if that's the problem. Then the IAC? One kills the other.
