Welcome to the dark side, Ian! Hope you get the truck sorted out.
Brendan.
Thanks Brenden!
I need more info. Does it crank and run and then die?
Yes
It has been different. He has started it in the driveway and has driven it for 20+ minutes and then I have started it, put it in gear and it dies before getting into second.
I suppose it runs longer in the early mornings when he is on his way to work, mid 70's I suppose. During the day's is when I have fidgeted with the thing, and it has been upper 80's. low 90's at times, and dies quicker from start.
How does it run? Rough, smooth?
It runs great!
How does it die? Sudden engine stop, or sputter and then stop?
It is a sudden kill, no indications at all. It as if you turn the key off.
Is it running at speed when it dies or at idle.
At speeds, runs great when idling.
When running, how does it respond to opening the throttle?
This has been different. Sometimes it will respond to throttle as normal and on few occasions it will seem to choke when applying a little throttle vs heavy throttle.
How does the exhaust smell as it dies? gassy or acrid?
gassy
How long did the old fuel sit in the tank?
I am not convinced the truck had sat long enough for the fuel to be bad. If so, I would not know.
How does the tank smell at the filler neck?
It smells normal.
Have you drained any fuel and was there water in it?
I have not noticed any water. We did swap out the fuel pump a couple weeks ago and has not changed a thing.
I really appreciate your help. Elliot had taken a trip to the Red River Gorge and took his key, so I could not do a thing to it yesterday and he is not getting home until tomorrow. So I have a bit of time to do a bit of studying.
cheers
