Just saw that.
We've got some big fires going here too; everyone well so far.
Those poor folks probably got caught in a wildcat.

In some places, it's called a dog and cat fire, where you're caught out on a ridge, and the fire runs uphill from more than one direction. It doesn't let you off the ridge to find shelter.
Just saw the winds were 40-50 mph, so no way those boys could've outrun that.

Just saw the news story/report and saw the kind of fire shelters they would have had to use if they got trapped... I'm surprised we don't have/issue something better...

Actually, we used to have nothing. Once you're in pop-tart mode, you have to try and dig a hole to get your face into in order to keep from getting the air sucked out of you and scorching your lungs. Shirts are made out of Nomex; I think their pants are now too, if wearing the green.
I don't think they had time for any of that; you can only carry so much gear and still work that hard. It's one tough-azzed dime to earn.
I just hope the guy who survived won't beat himself up too much over surviving; he was after all, only moving a truck.

I have heard a number of references to the shelters; pop-tart tents, shake n' bake, and a couple of others.
I do recall reading after an incident a few years ago that survival rates are rather low when the need to deploy the shelter occurs.
Yeah, those guys earn their pay...
