I have been want a roof top rack or basket for my Montero Sport, I know I can buy one but where is the fun in that???

So my thought has become how to make this and make it cool?

Here is where I am at I am thinking I could purchase a gently used truck ladder/wood rack and use that as a starting point. From there I am thinking about extending the legs down the body of the Sport and tying into the frame.

I would have a set on the rear between the rear glass and lift gate, then a second set just behind the front doors and a third set along the a pillar.

This is not going to be a Exo frame by any means but I was thinking in that same vein. Maybe do a little custom work and add a ladder to the rear corners that would also work as tail light guards maybe even tie in a rear bumper guard.

Any way working towards this just in the planning stage. Ideas and thoughts or anything you guys/gals could think of would help!

Check http://www.olympic4x4products.com/Sport-Racks.html for some ideas.

One issue to consider is coming down the side to the frame may require some stability support.

The ladder can be done and incorporate the tail lights. There are a couple of companies that have done that for jeeps. Asfir does make a few products that may give some ideas.

The one point I have concern with is getting any weight up high without having a stability point that leaves the shortest down run.

I have a Jeep JK that I am looking at rooftop tents. There are a number of products available. A couple I have seen are sturdy, maybe even over built.

Are you meaning something like Rock Sliders to attach to rather than just go to the frame. I thought about that, making something up like rock sliders or figuring out a way to tie into the step bar that is already there. Not sure which way I want to go.

But thank you your information is very helpful.
