This is silly but the more i read yhe more confused i get. I see that there are manuals i can download. There are some manuals for 98 montero and some for a 96. I have a 97.. So which repair manual would be the one i should read. Also sense i have your attention' im confused about engines also. 97 ls with a 3.5L, is it a 6g72? 6g74 or something else?
Please forgive the ignorance

Your 97 has the SOHC 3.5L, the 96 has the DOHC 3.5 L. So get the 98 manual. The gearing are the same on the 97 and 98 also.
While you are at it get the parts program ( ASA). Using it you can see what the differents are between all the models, as far as parts go.

6g72 = 3.0 6g74 = 3.5 6g75 = 3.8
same number whether sohc or dohc, and in the case of 6g72, 12 or 24 valve. 3.0 came in two flavors, sohc 12v, and dohc 24v. 3.5 came in two flavors, sohc or dohc, both 24v. 3.8 only came in sohc 24v.

Really get the ASA, I am on a few forums and tell people about it all the time, they never listen. It will save you so much time to have the OEM part numbers handy. Since this is done by VIN so you see parts for your car and options for it.

That clears up a lot thanks. i was wrong in assuming there must be a different number for a sohc vs a dohc

I'd imagine you could get it to run under Wine.

I'd imagine you could get it to run under Wine. Probably, or Virtualbox, worst case.
