2.6 Gen1 with Starion engine/turbo/TBI conversion and Megasquirt running 6AN fuel feed from Walbro 255lph pump. I've driven around 3000 miles now and it's been PERFECT other than a couple of occasions where I noticed it was studdering when the clutch was pushed in and braking. Took me a while to figure out the common denominator. It only happens 1/4 tank or less (still a good 3-4 gallons left based on fill-ups) and I brake hard when turning right. I'm actually around 1/8 right now and can make it do it consistently. But only braking aggressively while turning right (like into my driveway). Can actually hear the pump lose suction for a split second with the windows up/radio off/etc.

I can't tell squat from my manuals about how the pickup sits in there. Any recommendations or is the 255 pump and large fuel lines just pulling too much fuel for a tank/pickup designed for a little carb? Don't want to pull tank till I have a good plan. Any advice would be appreciated.

No need to pull it. There should be a gas pump access panel in the floor underneath your carpet.

Any chance that was on the V6 Gen1's only??? My fuel pump was mechanical underhood.

Yes, on 4cyl it is on the engine. All others it is in the tank accessed via a hatch under the carpet. Why don't all cars have that

Sawzall is your friend I've added a larger FP hatch to most of my Conquests and Starions over the years. Dropping tank for the yearly fuel pump change gets old....stupid ethanol.

Part of Ray's suggestion is true. The pickup is located on the front left side of the tank, mounted to the same plate as the fuel gauge float assembly. There are no access points from within the cab. You have access behind the rear axle, 5 or 6 Phillips screws to remove.

My fuel pickup line is hooked to a barb sticking out the front side of the tank??? Not from the plate like that picture....it's literally formed in the front of the tank. Something goofy about my tank???

Edit: I'll dig through my photos or take a new one. Now I'm confused.

My 87 was the same as shown, and I've seen an 89 4cyl and it was the same as well.

My astrovan had the same problem, except at any fuel level below 1/4 tank and any state of acceleration.

The only fix I can see is a fuel dam around the pickup with doors that only swing in. I think the FI tanks have one built in, or so I remember from having my tank out and having it tanked to get the old fuel and rust out.

So only the v6's have the access port? That sucks if you need to access the top of the tank...
