Need a Spot
I just bought a Montero and have a couple of questions. The engine runs great and the body is rust free. A real oddity around here. The first thing I noticed on the drive home is that it will not shift into overdrive. The light will toggle on and off but no o/d. It also will not downshift when you hit the accelerator and the cruise does not work. No cruise light when you hit the set button. I changed the thermostat and the temp gauge does work. Any ideas where I should go from here? Thanks, John.

The not going into overdrive and not downshifting may be as simple as adjusting the kickdown cable. When I got mine in 2006 (1994 model), the seller had tried to clean the engine up and pulled the kickdown cable out of the metal ferrule at the intake. It would not shift into OD until you mash ed gas to the floor and released while on a flat road.

The thermostat I put in was rated at 180. I seen in the owners manual it requires a 190. Would that cause it to not go into overdrive?

Probably not as mine is 182 degrees. I do not think that opening the thermostat sooner would cause it not to go into OD. I do think the cable needs a look. Although, mine is an LS with the 3.0 so yours may have a different downshift mechanism.

There is also a separate temp sensor used by the trans computer to monitor engine temp. 1 of the many on the water neck. Make sure all those are working properly. As a primary, would suspect the kickdown cable as mentioned previously first though.

The kickdown cable appears to be adjusted correctly. At full throttle, there is no play. I did find another temp sensor in the neck of the water inlet above the thermostat. It is a two wire sensor and do not show any of the auto parts show stocking it online. I will check with the factory tomorrow.
