I am trying to diagnose my Montero. It runs very good but will not shift into overdrive. The goes on and off with the button but does not affect the shifting. Can anyone tell me where the overdrive solenoid is and what it looks like?

Most likely the water temp sensor dedicated to the task of operating the OD solenoid. Check there first?

Think the solenoid is on top of the tranny. Remove the tcase and let the tranny droop to get at it. Ditto check the temp switch first...

Alternately, can't he just find that temp sensor and ground it? Then it will shift into OD at any temp, right, lockout controlled solely by the switch on the gear shift lever, as long as everything else is working?

John B. That's correct unless the temp sensor isn't the problem which is the situation in my case... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> In my case its likely the actual solenoid that's bad.

Mine - 2.8 TD turned out to be a control module - which I didn't even know it had till the guy traced it out and replaced it - perfect now.....MC856822 is the number of the old one he gave back to me.....

The temp sensor that controls the temp gauge is working fine. I found another sensor that has two wires. It is working properly as well. Is there another sensor that goes to ground when the engine reached proper temp? If so, I have not found it yet.

I am unable to find the overdrive solenoid. The transmission is a 4VAW3. There are no solenoids or wires on top of the transmission that I can find. There are wires on the passenger side of the transmission and several going into the transfer case. So far no luck with the overdrive solenoid.
