About 6 months ago a friend and fellow forum member called me on the phone. During our conversation Mike Warme asked me if I knew anyone who would be interested in purchasing his pickup he has bee restoring for the last 7 years. I did not have to think it over very long before I told him I was interested.

The pickup is a 1983 Mitsubishi 4wd Turbo Diesel SPX. Over the years he has replaced or repaired most of the mechanical's. The suspension was completely replaced with Sway-A-Way's up front and new Alcan Springs in the rear. All the bushings and ball joints were replaced. The interior was completely redone which includes a new dash. A few months ago it received a new paint job, bed liner and it was returned back to it's original glory with original decals. It also recently received new bumpers, all new glass and weather stripping.

He said all that was missing was an engine. He had a rebuilt engine ready to drop in the truck but I told him I wanted to go all out and get an a brand new imported 4d56.

Back in July I purchased a new 4d56 from www.maxoverdrive.ca It took about 3 months for the engine to arrive. I had the engine shipped to Mike's shop in SoCal where he has been working on it with his free time over the past month. He has done a great job on this truck.

Here are a few teaser pics.

Here is what she looked like prior to paint

Fresh paint and a fresh set of decals. It is still the original brown color.

A brand new 4D56 still sitting in the crate.

The engine properly at home in the engine bay.

Here are a few more of the engine bay. He had to swap out the oil pan for an OEM oil pan, make accommodation for the Garrett turbo charger and a few other minor mods. If you recall, the original engine came with a Mitsubishi TC05 non-wastgated turbo charger. This Garrett waste gated and water cooled turbo will add a good boost in power.

A good shot of the Garrett turbo

Another good shot of the Garrett turbo. The heat shield appears to be more functional as well. I have not decided what to do about the EGR but I may just block it off or just let it be.

The injection pump looks very similar to the 4D55.

You're killin' me, guy. That thing is great. The engine looks so G54B-ish/familiar. What do they share?

The 4d55/56 and the G54B engines do not share any common parts. Some of the accessories like the A/C compressor are the same but the starter, alternator, water pump, clutch, radiator, transmission, air intake, exhaust and oil cooler are all exclusive to the turbo diesel. The two engines do share common engine mounts and have the same transmission bolt pattern. So they are somewhat interchangeable if you wanted to do an engine swap.
