Is there a difference between a KM148 and an AW372? If so, what? Done a little searching on here with not much luck. I had to get a low-mileage used trans and according to Hollander they sent me the "right" one. Running the VIN through ASA, it's a KM148 that came out of an 89 LWB V6, while mine is a 91 that had an AW 372. So far, the only difference I've found is the filter is different. I can't get the throttle pressure adjusted to the correct shift points, but I'm thinking the cable may have stretched some, so I'm going to swap the TV cable from my old trans...

Any thoughts?

The 89 should be a non-lock up, and the later 90 / 91 are lock up. That is the torque convertor, BTW. That's all I 'know' about them.

I was thinking 89 was a break year for lockup and non. According to ASA, by the VIN's, the part numbers are the same for the torque converters. Should be good with that part. I was more concerned about any internal enhancements that may have been made as it pertained to strength. I'm locked front and rear with 35's and I wheel hard. I don't want to downgrade to a lesser unit...

IIRC, the l/u converter tranny has an "R" in the tranny code on the plate on the dside of the tranny, and the non l/u had a "P" in the code.

THe KM148 is an AW372. The l/u unit aw372 usually is marked aw372L, but not always. The torque converter have a larger lump on the front on the l/u units for the l/u clutch...

You should have no strength issues between the two. I think they are the same internally except an additional valve in the valve body and associated fluid path to the t/c and of course the different converter. You want the l/u unit imho. It saves about 300rpms at cruise under normal load and thus saves than much heat generation as well, as that 300rpms of work has to go somewhere, and in this case goes to heating up the atf. In theory, it should make about a 10% diff in mpg at steady state cruise at 70mph.

I had an 89 with a l/u converter. Don't know at what vin it changed, but it changed that year. If your donor vin t/c is the same part # as your truck, you should be golden.

Swapping the TV cable fixed the late shift. Some fiddling and adjustment got it just right. In ASA, both existing and donor have the same P/N for the torque converter. But, it's not locking up and I'm not sure why. The filters were different between the two units, so I'm thinking it has to be in the valve body. I may look and see if they can be swapped... or I may just get another trans to throw in it.
