Do they make metric (BPT?) to NPT air line fitting converters? #1067168 12/16/13 07:18 PM

I have a typical Chinese made compressor (smittybilt 2781) that uses the stupid metric fittings. I'm wondering if they make an adapter I can use at the compressor end of things to convert from whatever metric taper/thread it uses to our standard NPT fitting thread sizes?

Looking at using my own hose on it.

TIA,

Is it about the size of 1/4"npt? Just a tad too small? If so, you can use a 1/4"npt tap to slightly enlarge the hole to fit your hose.

There are adapters available, and your thread is probably bpt straight. Look and see if it tapers into the hole, or is constant diameter. Sorry, don't have a source, but it should be on here in the form of oil pressure sender fittings.

Thanks FE. I'm not sure if it's tapered like NPT threads. I've read you can drill it out using a 7/16" bit then re-tap it using a 1/4" NPT tap but I'm hoping to be able to undo it if I end up preferring the original setup for any reason. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Are you sure? 7/16 is 3/16 bigger than 1/4.

NPT sizes are deceiving. The inside diameter of the 1/4" pipe is close to 1/4", but the outside is a tad over 3/8.

I have neve found it necessary to predrill before tapping. I have always just started the tap, and did not tap deep at all (about 3/16"), and the bpt fitting would still engage leak free with a little teflon tape, so it's reversible.

This Smittybilt model is that units bigger brother. Roughly 2x bigger, faster, and more powerful. Also 2-3x more expensive at $150. It's the same as this one at northern tool, but the smittybilt one was only $150 or so from 4wheel parts.

It doesn't appear to taper and all the adapters I've seen are tapered thread adapters. Will those hold ok in a non tapered hole?

Yes they do make adapters from pretty much any thread to pipe. Take whatever fitting is screwed into it now down to either a local fittings/hydraulic store or a decent NAPA and tell them you want something that goes from that to pipe thread. Should not be too big of a deal no matter what thread it is. We do this all the time at work.
