Frustrating Having to install a couple of Heli-coils on the 88 that I found a header to replace the cracked stock exhaust manifold. Following faseddy's advice, I went to get some new locking exhaust nuts, which I have found to be important with headers. Checked with Advance, Discount, O'Reilly's, and NAPA. Pretty much looked at like I had an eye on my forehead . .I even had a girl at Discount recommend Nylock nuts. Really???? Anyone know a part number to offer one of these places. None of them use books anymore, and the effin computer is is to cumbersome. Any ideas? I'm gonna use locking washers with the original nuts, until I can find some. Probly order some from my original VW supplier. Sometimes this triple diamond stuff is so annoying.

Auto parts stores are horrible for metric hardware. Ace is the place...stainless, brass, aluminum, grades 7 - 8 - 10, are in the bins at three of the four stores near me. The one loner is outside the tractor area.

These are special. The threads constrict at the top of the nut, crating a friction lock on the stud without plastic inserts. We had an Ace with a great selection of metric, closed after a bad fire. I've heard they reopened, but not sure where

FE, when I worked auto parts, we had two different type of self-locking nuts. The first was a simple squeeze on opposite sides. The second appeared as if the nut was held in place and punched from three directions at about a 60 degree angle. This produced a hilly-looking nut that was definitely directional.

The English cars I've had mostly used brass nuts on the exhaust side, and few had lock washers. Due to the different expansion characteristics of the two metals (steel studs / brass nuts), the exhaust was kept tight when heated. I've used this arrangement on a Dodge W200 that I installed Thorley headers on, as well.

Uh, ok? Going to use lockwashers, until I can get up to the VW shop this weekend.

Use Mitzu EVO exhaust studs and nuts.... And open the holes on the manifold so it can move around under heat and cooling so it will not break the studs off ... Any and all generic nuts and studs from a auto parts store are junk..

Finally found a counterman that didn't rely on puter. He looked thru a Dorman book, found it. He is getting me the part #, I'll post it when I get it.
