Have owned both. Saw a fj-62 and got reminded of the time I owned my 88. Similar in size, motor and equipment, since I drove both I thought I would share my opinion of the difference and similarities: Motor: Monty v6 vs Toy straight 6....loved the toy straight six, built after the orig chevy straight six, strong torq but slower that the monty v6. 0-60 in 2 hours. Both were fuel injected. Tranny: Monty 5 speed and Toy was automatic. Drivability: Tie, they both are fun to drive, the monty dash is quirkier than the toy's seats are more comfy but I like the "speed" factor with the 5 speed. Appearance: Both are moving boxes, or bricks. Both have good fit, mine both have straight bodies, good lines. More comments with the cruiser. 4 wheel drive: Monty seems lighter, more nimble to manuveur, seems a bit shorter, toy transfer case seemed more solid. As a daily driver they both were fun, my MPG is about 3-4 mpg better with the Monty and parts cost about the same for both. Worth: Landcruiser worth considerably more than the Monty. Sold my Landcruiser in 2011, bought a f150 extended cab 4x4 which I sold later to buy the Monty. Results: Landcruiser probably a better investment, but I love and I'm the keeping the Monty. Anybody else own both ?

Toyotas:I have owned a 1969 FJ-55 rustbucket and a 1990 V6 extended cab 4wd pickup. I've also owned a 1982 Datsun/Nissan 720 std cab 4wd.
My Raider reminds me of the FJ55 the most. Point and drive. Reliable, stout, relatively easy to work on. The V6 pickup was also similar but the Raider handles better and is more fun (and more capable) off road. Overall, I prefer my Raider over either of them. The FJ55 was a driving project though, and as such had lots of small issues that the Raider has never had, but those don't factor in too much.

In high school when I was shopping for a truck. Both the mitsu and toyota were on the list amongst other domestics like bronco2.
I wanted an fj60... but anything decent cost like 6k. Rusty high mileage autos were going for about 2500-3k. I got my Mitsu with fresh 33's, lifted, and modded for a fraction. The owner almost begged me to take it while some FJ sellers were being very difficult with me.
Plus I'm in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The hipster capitol of the east coast. There are literally over 10 fj60's within a few blocks from me and 6+ fj40's within an oh so short walk. Only one gen1 mitsu, and over 2 miles away...
Reputation, image and price aside... in stock form equal. Budget build Mitsu, countless junkyard mods and motor swaps. With cash, you can do so much more with an fj, after market anything exists.

Oh, misread. So its Gen2 vs fj60. Thats easy... Gen2 is a tad bit more refined and better mpg despite similar output. Parts pricing and availability is similar. You can pick up a gen2 for a G in decent shape. Cant touch an fj for that in any shape. Plus regarding investment... the gen2 will always hold its value... of $1,000. Even if your fj is worth 3k its still hard finding a buyer to pay late model car prices for a 30y.o truck. (unless its absolutely mint and a true fan or collector gets it) Unless its a build or something, for average driving and mild off road, Gen2. For serious off road, I still can pay someone to do an sas on a gen2 and come out ahead than an fj stock.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love an FJ... just easier said than done.

I was sure 1990 was last year. Then my first post stands. I guess after all these years on craigslist I never ran past a 91 Montero for sale and in turn made an assumption or something.

My 91 is the final year for gen 1. It has all the "bells and whistles" such as cruise, power windows and fuel injection. Williamsburg ? My wife grew up on Graham Ave and Montrose Ave, where she went to ps 250....

I've never had an FJ60/62, but I've driven both. They are really no better than the FJ55 waggy I owned, except for fuel injection. Still have the warpomatic intake, still have the twisty frame and the massive rear overhang. Still have the inadequately bearinged F motor, good for a solid 4500rpms max if you want to drive it long. Mine got more capable with a 350sbc and 700R4, but was never great offroad. I do miss the aftermarket 3way locking hubs it had on it (auto, lock, free), but that's about it.
THe gen1 is slicker, better ride, better highway handling, better mpg, stiffer, better suspension articulation, better steering that stays tight longer (Damn that conical bearing on the end of the drag link), and I found the Toyota parts to be more expensive, and less available, but mine was a much rarer model.
And the owner groups tended to be more snobbish. FJ80 was a much nicer ride, but overpriced, too, and unless you had a CAPA supercharger, pretty damn slow.
One redeeming FJ55 trait, nobody ever pulled out in front of me, with the 3"x12" steel tube fromt bumper and the honking big Ramsey winch, but it was a hog in the mud
Not responsible for advice not taken...

yes my fj62 couldn't get out it's own way and I always worried about a seep hole (different name, cannot remember)on the head that could blow out and take all your oil with it, notorious for that straight six. The winning formula for me and my gen 1 (and the fj62 as well) is the openness, the large windows that wrap around the vehicle. I have the sunroof option too, so the best thing for my 2 year old is strapping her in the center of the back seat in her child seat and then watch her face as she is able to look up, out and all around at everything as we drive. Keeps us in constant chatting mode as she yells "school bus !" or "big truck !" or looka at the mountains papa !' as we drive. Can't do that in a Monte Carlo. Lastly, I was leaving work the other night and a newer four door jeep (rubicon) was parked next to me. Unbelievably they both look alike in clearance, hood size, height, door layout and sizes and length. Almost like Mitsu knew back in late 80's when they introduced the four door LWB Monty that this was the way of the future..... check it out...
