I have a 91 Montero LS and I would like to do the Rear Axle Swap and swap out the front brakes to the dual piston. I have a chance to purchase a 95 SR that has a Bad engine but the vehicle has 255K miles on it. It does have the rear locker also. Is it worth it to buy it with such high mileage or just wait until a lower mileage one comes up. I don't know how many miles you can usually get on one of those axles. I would just scrap out the rest of the truck to recoup my cost. Cost is $500

The SR axle should swap over but you may need to fiddle with the driveshaft if the ends don't fit properly.

Also consider swapping over the SR trailing arms if you're running un-reinforced gen I axles.

Based on the number of posts where an SR's rear axle has failed I'd say they last a long, long, long time. Mine personally have over 300K miles on them with only regular fluid changes. In fact the only one I recall hearing about failing was on a rig with 35's or 37's being abused hard down under (tracks going up hill if I recall correctly).

I'd bet you can count the number of failed axles in the US on just one hand.

As for the front brakes, IIRC Grasscat/Michael swapped over Gen II's into his Gen I.

I would think it would be fine- Especially if you are putting it on a 1991. I personally like my Gen 1 and wish I had the time/money to do the same.

i have a 1990 LS and did the exact same thing. I bought a 95 SR with a blown engine and swapped the axle, trailing arms, brakes, and a bunch of other stuff. Check out this thread Gen I to Gen II compatability thread

$500 sounds fair, it's about what i paid - then i sold the rest to a scrap yard and made some of it back.

Sounds like a good deal to me. The front brakes are easily worth it. Rear axle as well.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

I'm going to try and secure the purchase and hopefully get to work on upgrading the 91. I bet this will really tick the neighbors off for a while. Just have to get the engine built and in my wifes crappy xterra before I can get started.
