I have a '88 Gen 1 MM/dodge Raider SWB. The drivetrain is 2.6L with KM148 Auto. I'm very interested in doing the diesel swap. My current Trans is in rough shape and needs to be replaced or at minimum rebuilt. that said I would like to keep it an auto if possible if not I'll go to M/T.

welcome your thoughts / recommendations

If it will bolt to a 2.6L then it should bolt to the 4d56T. They share a common bolt pattern.

When you start shopping for a rebuilder for the tranny, tell them it's the same as the aw372 toyota trannies, which they are more likely to be familiar with...

The wideblock 4g64 or 4g63 motors are alternates to a diesel, much more modern than the 2.6, and capable of far more power using 4g63T parts.

Thanks for all the input. I wont be able to start this project until late may, but cant wait to get started.

I know there are some great (higher HP) alternatives to the 4D56T, but I like the oil burners. got a TDI, and a Cummins

There are other alternatives but the 4D56T was built to be a performance engine. From 1983-85 the Mitsubishi Turbo diesel was the fastest 0-60 production truck offered here in the states. That includes foreign and domestic pickups of all sizes and fuel types. It was the truck to have if you had a need for speed.

If you want diesel that's fine... But personalty I can make as much or more power with a turbo 2.6. I personaly have made a few 2.6 with more then 300TQ by 3000rpms. Getting the tranny to hold up is a harder deal.

Big power isn't my objective with this project.
really trying to achieve 3 things:

1. Reliable DD
2. Better MPG
3. competent off-road, nothing extreme

So I assume the 4D55T Flex plate should work on the 4D56T, any issue with Torque converter / starter
