Hey guys and girls,
My girlfriend and I are heaving to Vegas / Arizona / CA for a trip at the end of the month. I'll lay out my basica itinerary, and are looking for your guys advice on what to see / do / what roads to drive.

Vegas for 3 nights at the Palazzo (thurs/fri/sat)
Drive to flagstaff sunday.
Visit the Grand Canyon monday. Stay in, GC? Sedona?
Sedona tuesday.
? wednesday
? thursday
friday night, staying in LA
fly out saturday afternoon.

Do you guys have any ideas? we were thinking of going to Lake Havasu or Parker for the wednesday, and Joshua tree on thursday (or on friday morning, and driving to LA afterwards).

We've never been down that area (outside of Vegas) and want to see as much as we can.

Any tips / insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

This is from plans for a trip we are making out to the area this spring...

If you like riding the rails, the Verde Canyon RR is too good to miss... http://verdecanyonrr.com/ in Cottonwood just east of Jerome.. Of course the entire 89A (alternate) route passing through Sedona and Jerome is prime for some slow cruising and sightseeing.

89A out of Flagstaff at a minimum down to Prescott, and possibility all the way down to Congress, Az is in my book a must drive route. This area is called the painted desert for the colorful rock formations in the area.

Another RR ride possibility.. the train from Williams to the Grand Canyon.. Have you made reservations at GC yet? Price and availability might become an issue. An alternative would be to stay in Williams and take the train up to the GC and back.. http://www.williamstours.net/?p=1

On the your way out there coming east on I-40, a stretch of the old Route 66 out of Kingman at I-40 Exit 53 that runs through Hackberry, Peach Springs, and goes by the Grand Canyon Caverns (a must see if you like caverns) Seligman, and pretty much ends at I-40 Exit 139. This stretch of 66 parallels the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad..

If you have a Garman GPS this route is in the map data base. With detailed maps of the area, highly recommend getting off the interstates and travel the local scenic roads in the area.

Petrified Forest is to the East out of Holbrook.

Our destination for the drive out is Tucson.. so the aviation boneyard and possibility the Titan Silo are on our list.. There's so much stuff down there, the Saguaro National Parks East and West, Karchner, and many others, we will have to pick and choose based what time will permit..

Might be better staying in Flagstaff which is between Sedona and GC.

On I-10 just east of Palm Spring is a place called Desert Center. There is a nice museum that covers the troop training conducted by General Patton prior to the Allied invasion of North Africa in WWII.

Palm Springs has a tram ride that gives you a great view of the valley, especially in the evening. They do offer a ride and dine special.

Joshua Tree is nice, if you have a 4x4 as most of the park roads are unpaved and there is a lot of sands.

Never "ridden the rails" other than the commuter train downtown, but i would love to! Will deinitely look into them.

I'm planning on taking rt66 as far as i can from vegas to flagstaff, i will have to check out the caverns for sure. I have a new garmin gps so i should be all set in that regard (i should plug it in to update maps for 2014 now that i think about it...)
I'll take the 89a to prescott, that is the kind of info i was looking for. Looking at the maps there are a few different options for going west. On my trip to ireland a few years back it was an amazing drive, we followed the ocean as much as possible, even if it meant another hour or 2 of driving... Views were breathtaking.

Tuscon is alittle far south, maybe another time! Thanks for the tips!

Do you think its worth driving all the way down to palm springs on my ride from sedona to lake havasu? That museum sounds interesting but its a ways drive south (to phoenix basically)?

We are going to have a car as a rental (wish i had my truck). Are there any other must-see places between Lake Havasu and LA? There are so many city/location names that stand out when i look at a map but i dont have time to see them all. Your thoughts?

Looking at the map... it's on the south side of JT. When i first googled it, i found Palm Spring Arizone (a little suburb of Phoenix) but now i notice it's Palm Springs CA
https://www.google.com/maps?q=62510+Chiriaco+Rd,+Indio,+Riverside+County,+California+92201&hl=en&ll=33.870416,-115.688782&spn=1.849407,3.749084&t=m&geocode=Ff6iAQIdnDYa-Q&hnear=62510+Chiriaco+Rd,+Indio,+California+92201&z=9
I guess it would depend on which route we take around JT.

Thanks!

As your ultimate destination is LA, Flagstaff, Sedona, and Havasu are along your base line of travel. Palm Springs is between Havasu and LA

Coming out of Havasu, pick up 95 South to 62 West t Vidal Junction. Follow that to 177 South to I-10 and west to Palm Springs. Desert Center is along I-10.

There are several interesting things to see in Palm Springs. Living Desert and a botanical garden with every prickly plant in desert regions are two places.

Or, head north on 95 to Needles and west Goffs. There is a museum (Goffs School) that displays the heritage of the Mojave Desert region. From Goffs, head to Kelso where the National Park Service has restored an old train station. Between Goffs and Kelso is the Mitchel Caverns.

Of lesser interest is the Calico Ghost Town near Yermo (Barstow).

There is a lot to see and a lot of ground to cover in a short time.
