OIL PUMP Problem?? #1070409 04/01/14 12:13 AM

I just pulled my old oil pump and found that the silent shaft (that connects to the pump) is missing....

Question?

Does the silent shaft affect the oil pressure?

I've posted pictures on my FB since I'm not able to upload to this post... Hope I do this right....

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...set=pcb.10202193794820359&type=1

History: my oil pressure wasn't stable and I was getting knocking noise from the lifters and the noise cleared only when I floored it (high RPMS-high oil pressure)....

Thanks for any help or suggestions.....

Sounds like a balance shaft elimination kit. Have a picture. Also what size was the chain?

UPDATE:
OK - just completed another serious search....
DR1665 (April 23, 2013) posted 2.6 engine information and after reviewing his posts, my engine doesn't have the two 'silent shafts' (lower left and upper right).

My engine oil pump runs directly off the cam-shaft... My engine doesn't have the chain that runs like DR1665... DUH-what did I purchase? I guess that's what I get after purchasing a rebuild (2001) from Washington, and now I live in Washington.... Should go shoot somebody?

Just posted my answer while you were asking it... Chain runs straight from pump around cam-shaft....

I'm confused.

Is that picture of the pside balance shaft bore? IIRC, it is. The oil pump on a 2.6 is driven by the balance shaft chain. If a BS elim kit is used, both balance shafts get tossed and a very short spud shaft is bolted into the pump and a new short chain drives it off the crank sprocket, a large thin sprocket in front of the crank sprocket for the cam chain, which is larger, two row roller chain, not a small pedal bike sized chain for the BS, or in this case, oil pump.

There should also be a blank bearing shell in the dside BS bore to block the oil passage for that now missing shaft, without which you will have very low oil pressure.

The oil pump has a pressure relief valve under the large hex plug on the upper left of the pump. The valve is a spring resisted piston with oil pressure on the pump side. If the bore is scored, you lose a lot of oil pressure that way. The spring can be shimmed for higher pressure, too. I used a single flat washer under the spring. When the oil pressure exceeds the spring pressure, the piston uncovers a port in the side of the bore and the excess pressure is vented to the crankcase.

Also, tear the pump cover off and inspect the pump walls and gears for scoring and excess clearance, and that the chain sprocket was tight on the spud shaft. Clearances and measureing procedure are in the FSM on mitsubishilinks.com.

Thanks guys... I meant crank shaft, so thanks for catching my oversight....

FASTEDDY, I tore off the old pump, and after reading your reply, it sounds like the new pump will not work unless I add those items (The oil pump has a pressure relief valve under the large hex plug on the upper left of the pump. I found a KIT (balance shaft removal kit) on Rock-Auto, will that have all the items I need? I haven't reviewed the kit yet, but I'm just guessing as I write this...

You guys are fantastic....

OK, it's called Balance Shaft Elimination Kit

(DNJ ENGINE COMPONENTS, P/N - BSE101, Name - Balance Shaft Elimination Kit, Price - $17.86)

I appreciate all your help... To some of you guys, I might come across as knowing all, but I don't, and that's why I'm here and asking for advice, help, and suggestions...

FastEddy - you're worth your weight in gold... Thanks...

Stop. Back up. Take pictures of what you tore off the front of the motor, and both BS bores in the motor, perhaps from about 6" back from the one you posted.

If you have no BS's you MUST have already had the BS elim kit installed, or the oil pump would not have worked at all. That price seems low, perhaps because it doesn't have all the required parts. Check Engine Machine Services for a complete kit from a known good supplier for the 2.6. This guy is well known in the Starquest community for guality and customer service. Talk to Randy if you can...

FastEddy,

Sorry for the long delay, here's the link showing the pictures... I'm assuming the elimination kit is already installed since the sleeve, small gear, small gear chain and mini shaft (installed on old pump) as you described in your previous reply. I've purchased another mini shaft since I destroyed the old one.

I'm a little confused about some of the things you said you did to the pump. Other than the shaft and bolt (replaces the DBS), is there anything special I have to do to it besides having the elimination kit installed?
