Getting the Wheeling Fever
SO turns out another SR is falling into my lap and I just cant pass it up. It's a 96 with around 150,000 on it. The motor is siezed or something don't know for sure but for the price ($600) I dont care much. My 94 is a bit rougher than the 96 but does have a functioning engine. So looks like I'll be swapping the engines and I'll have to swap the BL over to the 96. I'm pretty excited about all the possibilities. One question I have is about doing the swap. Previously I pulled just the engine on the 94 and it was a bit of a pain getting to all the bell housing bolts. Does anybody have any recomendations on pulling the engine/tranny/transfercase as one unit? is it possible. There's not a whole lot of space in the engine compartment and I haven't done this before. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS I'm a newb but I aint scared to get after it.

Body Damage is Cool
doesn't the drive train typically get installed as a unit from the factory?

I wouldn't suggest trying it. Why not undo the bellhousing bolts on the '94, then remove the body lift, install the body lift on the '96 and install the engine. The body lift should make it quite a bit easier to get at the bolts.

They may have installed the power train as a unit at the factory, but it doesn't mean you have the same access, as other things installed are going to be in the way.

If you use the engine from the '94, you are not going to get the OBD-II diagnostics that are in the '96. You'll also need to swap the engine ECU and probably its harness.

Why would the OBD 2 not work in the 96 if you swapped in an engine from a 94? will all the sensors not swap over? Im thinking he plans to swap long blocks and keep engine management stuff in place...

We put a '94 Motor into Lloyds '96, we just swapped the '96 sensors and intake over onto the '94. For the most part even the sensors are the same except one or two on the intake.

Not from a gen2, but I've installed the engine, tranny, and tcase as a unit. It would be easier to install engine and tranny, then put the tcase on from the bottom. It's quite hard to tilt the motor correctly with all that weight on the tail end just hanging..

In any case, if you drop the tcase xmemeber, the motor tilts aft far enough to get at the upper BH bolts with enough wobble extensions.
