hey guys

up in canada there is almost nothing for old mits so i dont have a lot of options.

I really wanted a v6 auto lock up trans but have not been able to find one that would ship to canada or at least ship to sweetgrass at the border.

I have recently added a turbo to my 2.6 and have deffinitly noticed the trans not able to hold the extra power. so....

I found the one and only v6 auto trans in canada, it had 130 000 mils and condition was described as fluid burnt works ok. So now for the question.

My trans works perfect just needs to have some upgrades.

Do I use my trans that i know works great and add the v6 tourqe converter and other bits??

Or do I swap the bell housing and see what this v6 trans is about??

One problem is the shift linkage is completly differant on the mighty max vs the montero so I dont even know if the montero one would fit?

I have limited hoist time to do this so dont have a lot of time to experiment.

Thanks guys

mike

The only real upgrade is the lockup v6 tranny. Just the converter does nothing, as you have to have the right vavle body and the right trans case with the right oil passage to lock the converter. One other possible upgrade is better frictions in the tranny, but that requires a total rebuild.

I would use car-part.com and search junk yards in the US near the border that you could drive to and haul the tranny back. I don't think you would have a lot of trouble with customs duties on used auto parts.

I bet the linkage would swap, but you can also use an aftermarket floor cable shifter (Lokar or Art Carr or similar) to move the shifter and delete the sloppy column shifter. If you have a bench seat MM, the stock floor shifter may not work in any case, as it sits far aft and has always been an awkward move for long armed me...

I think most all the shifter bits bolt to the tranny/tcase adapter housing or to the tcase itself.

I used a 4cyl a/t behind a turbo motor and had no holding problems, and I suspect your tranny may be on it's last legs if it is slipping. You need to put a gauge on the line and regulated pressure taps and gauge tranny health.

ok hmmm, think maybe there is a misunderstanding. From what i have read on this forum is that even a v6 non lock up converter is a upgrade from 4cyl one even if it is not a lock up.

When I said my trans was slipping i did not mean like it slipped and I was not able to move but more like i guess the converter felt like it slipped when the boost hit....

The trans honestly seems to work great just seems like i guess there is to much converter slip.

Sorry if i dont use the correct terminology not very good with autos but I think from what I read that there was a few v6 non lock up trans parts that could be swapped into the 4cyl that was a upgrade. Converter and some sort of pressure valve or something that helped it shift a little harder.
