So I've got an operational 94 and just picked up a 96 with a bad cylinder. In the long term I ought to just swap motors and build up the 96, but honestly I already have the 94 up and running and lifted and want to steal a few parts (adjustable shocks and multi-meter instrument cluster) over to the 94. I'm trying to sort throught the electrical schematics but not having much luck. The 94 has the compass/inclinameter/altimeter, the 96 has the compass/oil pressure/can's remember the third. Anybody know if it's possible to mix and match these?
Also the 94 does not have the adjustable shocks but the 96 does. Will the 94 have the wiring harnesess for the adjustable as well as the control module?

What would possess you to want to swith to the EXPENSIVE adjustable shocks? The 96 shocks are probably no good anyways. My truck is supposed to have them and it doesn't now.

cause I was told by the previous owner that the adjustable shocks were still working well and i think it would be worth having the ability to adjust the the ride quality to the road conditions. Am I crazy? Maybe but I've heard that when they work they are really nice...

Re adj shocks, I set mine on hard and left them there. Re the gauge cluster, The compass is not accurate enough, the altimeter is a pain to keep adjusted (it's barometric, so when the air pressure changes due to a high or low pressure system, you have to recalibrate the gauge, or you'll be off thousands of feet. The oil pressure gauge is too highly damped for best use. I prefer a mech oil pressure gauge.

Thanks FastEddy, By "Re" you mean remove right? You never felt like adjusting to medium or soft for dirt roads or offroad? Previous owners said you could really feel the difference. I planned on getting rid of the altimeter useless in my opinion and keeping the inclinometer. maybe I'll look into the mech oil pressure but if the electric one from the 96 is plug and play I may go that route due to ease/lazyness.

He meant "Re"garding...
The adjustable shocks on my first 95 (aquired in 96) were great. However, two of the three Monteros since that did not have them, also did not have the wiring. Actually haven't checked on the current 00, as I assume it doesn't either. I looked at one in a JY and the wiring to the shocks was all wrapped into the rest of the frame wiring and I wasn't interested in dealing with that. Might be different for you as yours sits in the drive.
Do you have kids? Plan to if not? The 96 will be third row and sliding rear window, plus the split second row. Might be worth reconsidering fixing it and swapping from the 94 what you want.

Oh "Re"garding, thanks Monty I'm kind of new to the online forum. I do have a 6 year old but the 94 does have all that you mentioned except the split back seat which I actually like better. The 96 is leather which is showing signs of wear and the split seat doesnt look like it would sit a third person as comfortably as the bench seat in the 94. Even though what may happen is I'll stick with the 94 as I have just got it running and maybe eventually get around to fixing up the 96 (all the while probably robbing parts from the 96) IDK we'll see.

Well, my memory is fading. I thought 94 saw the first DOHC, but not the third row.
I think your right that the split 2nd isn't quite as nice for three. Also loses the middle armrest for two. The trade off is much easier access to the third row.
Note that if you end up parting out and scrapping the 96, pull the cables from the second row seats. The one that that does the tumble (after it folds) will fail over time and they are not available from Mitsu. Have had two break myself. I have a few now on the shelf, having pulled some when at the u-pull.

The one that that does the tumble By tumble do you mean slide forward or roll up? Just curious cause I haven't had the monty long enough to know all it's capabilities. So far I noticed the 2nd row seat will fold and slide forward or just fold all the way over (forward). thanks.

The split 2nd row should fold flat on the backs, then the whole thing flips forward. Pretty much like the back seat in an SWB.
