So I got this weird problem on one of my SR's, I noticed the 1st time when I went thru deep water and after spraying the engine bay with the house water hose. Basically the engine starts to idle weird and shaky, when you take off it has some hesitations. The problem goes away after 5min or so of driving it. (prob after if gets dry)
has anyone dealt with this problem in the past? if so any suggestions?
I tried to pin point the problem by spraying small amounts of water around the throttle area and connectors with a small bottle sprayer but nothing happened. As soon as I spray with the water hose you can see the problem again. I did isolate the are near the throttle since that's the area I water down.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate.
BTW, my other 94sr does not have this issue at all..

Sounds like your plug wires or dist. cap are shorting out when wet.

I would pick up a can of Wire Dryer and spray everything electric. Wires, cap (take cap off) sensors etc... Then go from there.
Is it throwing any codes?

Here, I just looked it up in my grimoire, and I'll 'splain it to you.
It's a distributor-less system. It uses 3 double headed coils, and it fires them one at a time, sending spark to two cylinders at a time, one spark negative, and one positive. It uses three power transistors where the gen1v6 uses one. The computer reads the crank and cam sensors and fires the coils at the right time to give the right ignition advance per the spark tables in the ecu.
A little more on pos and neg sparks. It takes a lot more current/voltage to make a positive spark. To make a negative spark, you only have to goose neg charge electrons, which have a very low mass, and thus don't have to be goosed as hard as much heavier mostly protons with a pos charge. The positive spark is also much more erosive to the plug metal. You will find much more electrode loss on the positive spark plugs.
One more note. This is also called a waste spark system, because one of the two sparks from the double headed coil doesn't do anything but light up an emptying cylinder at the tail end of and exhaust stroke.
The next evolution of ignition is the COP, or Coil On Plug system, where there is one small coil on each plug, all controlled by the ecu. This eliminates most plug wire, and means the coil has the max available dwell time to charge back up for the next spark, which is very important at high rpms when the time interval between sparks is very short.

Thanks fasteddy for edumacaten us. Really though, I had to say out loud to myself "I did not know that!" Good information, thanks for the breakdown.

Is it throwing any codes? Well it's got the check engine light on but it's been on even before. Code 14 I think TPS, I replace it but has to set it up properly I guess cause the light came back on. And yes these engines have coils not distributors.

Closest I have to that is the 89. But I have messed with heeps and I have found a good cleaning of all contacts with contact cleaner, then a liberal coat of dielectric grease on all contacts has solved 90% of the issues with deep water. I get plenty of practice down here in Florida with deep water, there is too much of it here sometimes. ![[Linked Image]](http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt64/fastfoodvw/9-15-12%20Christsmen%20Obstacle%20Course%20and%20Mud%20Bog/20120915_102700.jpg)

Check all your electrical connections to make sure they are tight and have their seals intact. Otherwise dielectric grease them and reassemble, you're problem sounds electrical rather than a little water getting into a vacuum leak. I'd help you do all this today but you live too far.
