ive never worked on 4x4's before, but in the middle of tearing apart my friends 89 Raider 3.0L. Putting on new front brakes. Have taken everything off, and i know i have to re-pack the wheel bearings etc. My question is...the outter auto hub...how do you know if its worn out or how do you service it? The manuals don't mention anything...looks like there is a bearing in there...do i just try and cram as much grease in there as possible...the back side seems to half come off but i can't take it apart, any advice?

I know with the manual hubs you dont stuff them with too much grease as they stick and jam. I had that happen and had to tear then apart. I wouldn't be surprised if too much grease on auto hubs would also be a no no.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

Very true on to much grease ...The grease can freeze to in NYC and places like Canada ...In AZ its not really a problem on freezing ... The auto hub is not made to dig into and take apart really ... They do need grease just not packed full...

Oh wow, I never even considered the weather. When I switched to manual hubs I packed it so full the spring and mechanism had no room to move, and this was in the summer. Image how bad it could have been come winter when I need it to work most. Thanks for that insight.

"I" dont hose the auto hubs out with brake cleaner .."My" feeling is the B/C waters down the grease thats hiding in the hub that you cant get to on the repack... I wipe as much as I can out and repack the hub ... Ive done hundreds over the last 30 years as the day job is a mechanic....
