Getting the Wheeling Fever
I noticed that my once cold a/c needed a charge. After charging it up, it got cold. Then I went to drive it and it had a strong smell like spray paint coming out of the vents. Then the cold was gone.

Any ideas as to what happened?

That or the evaporator or a connection in there.

KWitcher, it's a hard place to diagnose where the leak is because you can't really get in there without removing stuff. You could try dye then remove covers and use UV light to possibly see dye leakage.

If it's a 95 and never serviced it probably could use expansion valve and o-rings. Since it has leaked out you could also use compressed air and soap solution to look for bubbles. After fix you'll need to pull a vacuum for at least an hour.

It's in the part of the system that is under the dashboard.

I looked through the Service Manual but didn't see anything about the expansion valve in the AC/Heating chapter? Anyone know where I can find some "how to replace" instructions? It's hot in NC and I want my AC back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Winter's just around the corner, then you'll have plenty of time to fix.

92-95 manual, page 55-34 et seq, gives the evap removal instructions. The expansion valve is item 7. It doesn't look too hard, unless getting the low/hi pressure line connection loose is a bugger. Remove the glove box door, the speaker garnish to the right of it, and unclamp the evap from the heater box and fan box and it's out.
