Driving home last night all dash, gauge, heat/AC, etc lights died. Idiot lights, highbeam light, blinker lights, etc still fine. Search not working for me today so hopefully this is a simple fix. I'm guessing the rheostat is dead???

Something else?

Just did some diagnostics at lunch. Tails are also out and fuse blown. Replacing fuse blows as soon as lights are turned on. Headlights fine. Just what I wanted to do this weekend.....track a short.

Any advice on where to start?

Body Damage is Cool
Someone on the forum was recently talking about solving their electrical short in a trailer wiring harness. As it turned out, somehow it was grounding on the exhaust pipe below the bumper.

Not going to be the issue here, no trailer wiring or other errant hookups. I unhooked the dimmer switch, replaced the fuse 2, and all my nighttime exterior driving lights work fine. Dimmer switch checks out fine. I shorted the pigtail to the dimmer (basically 0 resistance = full brightness condition) and fuse blew instantly again. Something related to the dash lights is the culprit.

Think I found it. Starting unplugging illumination harnesses that were easy to reach and plugging back in to see which took out the fuse. Tracked back to radio and found a scuff on the GW wire to dim radio with lights on. So far all is good. Just thankful it didn't track to one of the gauge clusters.
