just looking at this thing, thinking about its' age, and wondering what I would do if I was out in back of beyond and it blew out whatever it's made of. The valve and pipe , which goes thru the firewall to the hose,,,is bad enough,,,but last night I realized that thing also has a major bracket welded (not bolted) that would make this thing very difficult to re-engineer or modify/fix somehow. . Anybody ever had one break???. . How did you fix it???

Anybody ever had one break???. No, but they can leak coolant through to heater core so heater always on. I just replace, pretty cheap (mostly plastic) and you can usually cross them over to another make/model as it's a simple on/off valve. I find NAPA good for trying to do that.

so your saying you can take the guts out of the pipe and replace that with guts from a similar part? I've never had one apart, but there's a little stainless steel rod that goes into the pipe and it must have a seal of some kind around it. Not worried about my heater not working, just if that probable seal blew and steamed my foot off.

Measure the spread between the two heater connections at the firewall. Solder up two 1/2" copper elbows and three short pieces of 1/2" copper pipe into a squared U to make a bypass. Remove heater feed and return hoses from the connections and clamp to bypass. Top up water and drive home.

Or use a piece of heater hose (in a pinch) to loop from the coolant "out" from the engine back to the "in."
LordTrunks doesn't need a heater. Why should anyone else? J.K., I'm from the Midwest...I remember...

so your saying you can take the guts out of the pipe and replace that with guts from a similar part? No, I'm saying you may be able to replace the entire valve with different application part.

Right now I've got a hose in aloop on back of engine,,cause I haven't commitedyet to buyin oEM hoses. My long term concern is fixing it/ preventative maintenance on something really old. This thing is pretty unique and getting something similar and cutting and soldering my be the way to go. The other possability is to grind/de- solder the joint to the bracket,,pull valve guts out , solder a cap on pipe , weld/ solder it back to bracket. Then put a valv in the hosethat yo operat 2 time / year.

That would work. The fact that 1/2" copper is a close match will make finding a vavle easier. In fact, you may find a quarter turn valve that would allow using the oem lever to turn it, and make the valve change transparent.

good idea, Eddy, I'm thinking now that a small plumbing type ball valve could be fitted due to the really long pipe the present valve has before it goes thru firewall. I don't care if the cable works it, but inside like you discribe would be no problem to reach under dash and flip. What type valve that is clear are you talking about?

What type valve that is clear are you talking about? I use one similar to this to shut off to block flow in summer mounted on firewall connection: http://www.amazon.com/Four-Seasons-84707-Shut-Off-Valve/dp/B000DCNGLK#productDetailsThe one review that says it leaks through the thread is not very accurate. When the valve is fully off or on it does not leak. Only weeps a little fluid when opening/closing.
