Could never tell the difference from the OEM stat, so not sure of your snide, broken part comment. Have you done temp testing you could post of Stant versus OEM so we might all see how the "broken" one differs so much?
It's been done, and has been proven repeatedly that the aftermarket thermostats have shoddy quality and thoroughly unreliable operation. A little Google searching will certainly get you more than enough reading material about thermostat failures. I've personally had two separate brand new A/M t-stats that I've tested that were off by more than 10 degrees from their stated operating temperature.

What's an A/M t-stat? Is it a Stant? A/M = aftermarket And I personally haven't had any issues with aftermarket t-stats, but it wouldn't surprise me if they fail more often since 95% of manufacturers, no matter what their product is, are trying to find cheaper ways of manufacturing, whether that be in the materials they use or the process in which they produce their product.

Don't think you can lump all A/M stats in same bucket. As I said, I've never had a problem with "Stant". Never once have they displayed any problems with temp control. I can understand some overshoot in opening temp due to manufacturing tolerances and simple design of stat but it certainly has never shown up in temp gauge or engine operation. Stant may even be manufacturing for OEMs.

I stopped at Mitsubishi and picked up an OEM stat. I have had bad luck with AM stats on my DSM's. It was $15 for the OEM part.
I have it in the truck now. It's 30 deg today but I didn't drive the truck down. I plan to do that tomorrow and it will be about as cold as it is today.
Not that this matters by my Galant VR4 held temps all the way down today and I literally was at idle for 15+ miles. Hoping the Montero does the same tomorrow.

You can't go wrong with OEM except in price. A Stant Superstat is $9 at Advance Auto. The cost of dealer is not all "quality", a lot is overhead and the fact that they just charge more to make more.
