Hello all. I am following up on my head gasket saga. http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...;amp;page=0&fpart=3&vc=1 I went for a full rebuild. Now, at the final stage, after much headache, I find that the throttle body assembly on my V6, 3.0L, has a cooling unit between it and the intake manifold/plenum. Do I need 2 gaskets? What brand should I buy?

This is the cooling unit front view:

Why is the is the cooling unit missing from the diagram?

FYI, it's not a cooling unit - the design runs hot coolant through the throttle body to prevent icing. If you live in a mild climate where near-freezing temps are not an issue, you can usually bypass the coolant loop in the throttle body with no issues, and it actually might gain you 1 or 2 hp due to the cooler intake air.

Folks, how many gaskets? I did not see gasket residue on the right side of the "heating" unit, where it mates with the intake manifold. Moreover, the throttle body will not mate onto the intake manifold without that heating part.

I made my own gaskets for that. One on each side. I used bullet shells to make the round holes, and an exacto to cut it out. I looped the water hoses together, not connecting them to that spacer.

Amen. Thank you for the straight answer. What did you use to make your gasket?

If anyone is curious, it looks like gaskets for intake manifold and heating unit are sold at:

I got the TB gasket from the dealer,,,cheap, like $4.
Unless your going to be in the midwest, midatlantic states SE Alaska, I'd do away with the heater plate(a recall installed item),, that gives you 2 fewer hoses to break.
I eventually did away with the other 2 hoses and blocked off that pellet contoled air valve , too. Just opened he screw bit for slow idle, The ICS akes care of the rest.

partubershould be in repository. All aftermarket gaskets will only fit 24 valve models., but dealer stillhas them.

Pellet controlled air valve and idle change? In California, I have to pass rigorous smog, and do not want to fail. If I get rid of the heating plate, can I simply loop a water hose to the now unused water fittings on the engine?

originally there were 2 hoses going to the trttlebody. Recall added the heating plate and 2 more hoses in router to the 2 connections,,,the manifold and the long under the manifold pipe to water pump.
Emmission might well fail you in CA when they see removed equipment (hose bibs sticking out.
I see somebody just brought up my old post on TB,,,.
