I'm thinking of attempting this swap...Used 3.5's are hard to find and expensive.

Its seems as though the 3.8 non mivec engines out of endeavors are a dime a dozen..anywhere between 500-700 bucks. As far as I can tell by researching its the same block as the 3.5 but factory stroked and bored. Same heads as the 3.5 SOHC.

My current engine has a new set of heads but a knock down low, so was contemplating getting a 3.8 out of an endeavor and using the bottom end only.

I know Old Colt did this with a 95 taking a galant 3.8 and swapping on the 95 DOHC heads and accessories so, should work in a SOHC as well..or so the theory goes.

I know it would be easier to go like for like, but if I can gain a little for for less $$ it might pan out.

Thoughts?

I like this topic. Hmmm... I don't know enough about the endeavor to know the difference. I guess I'll be doing a little research over the weekend.

I swore Toasty has already researched this and it will work. It is a stand alone engine, you wouldn't need the trans to go with it , so it is basically a wiring swap. I think.

This dime a dozen thing is not happening here in Jax FL. All of the Mitsu's here seem to get bought up and shipped to Central America and south for parts. There are a couple my that don't do that, but they are in the minority.

The endeavor engines on the net, and local are cheap. If I do it, I plan to use my heads on the 3.8 block so no wiring to do. From what I've researched all outside dims are the same on the 3.5/3.8. Might have to grind a few bosses down on the block to get the brackets all to bolt on correctly.

So this means the ignition system is basically different, which is what would require a completely different wiring set-up? And if you had a V6 truck, the 3.8 physically bolts in, it would just be a matter of wiring, ECU change?

I plan on possibly doing this swap into a 99 with a 3.5 SOHC, and using my existing heads and entire intake, so no plans to modify any wiring.

Basically what im trying to do is buy the 3.8 and use it like a short block and bolting everything externally from the 3.5 SOHC onto it before swapping it in.

How will the 3.5 ECU react to the extra .3 liters of diplacemnt? I dont know, but I think it should be fine as charlie used the Factory ECU on his 3.8 galand engine swap and reported good results.

If you go this route and end up curious how the engine is running, just slap in a wideband o2 sensor and get readings of your ratios.

My guess is it will run a hair leaner than a 3.5, but some engines like jeep 4.0 run like that stock for 300k miles.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

I really like this idea, i ended up scoring a great deal on a low milage 3.5 SOHC so i never attempted the swap. I was going to run just the intake and things from my 3.5 on the 3.8 and then since i have a late model Gen 2 it has a programmable ECU so i was going to have it tuned as well. I would think it would just work as is though.

Go for it and document the process.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have developed a knock also and have simultaneously determined that my little SUV's engine ins not sufficient for 33" tires or towing. I have been researching swapping in a 6g75 for the last 2 days. I would like to swap information with you and what you have found. The block and heads are nearly identical to the 6g74 what has mainly changed is the bore, stroke, pistons, rods, wrist pin and intake runners. The 6g75is basically a stroker 6g74. Easy swap too. Just bolt on your accessories and sensor, plug it in and go. Same wiring harness and ECU. You can get your ECU reflashed to change the mapping and take advantage of the bigger bore and better flow.
Here are a few links that I have saved.
