I know this has been discussed, but I'm not finding it, so please don't flame me or delete the post.

I have a 1987 Gen I 2.6L automatic, standard lift. Still has the original 15 inch steel rims.

Just bought a set of aftermarket chrome steel rims (maybe American racing - not sure). They are 15" diameter and the width OVERALL is 8". from the face of the wheel to the outside of the rim looks to be about 4 inches. THe wheels are "toyota/chevrolet" wheels and the bolt pattern appears to be correct for the Monty.

Mu concern is over the offset and width overall. I am worried that I could be making a problem for myself if I mount these on the GenI - especially with tires hitting the fenders and possibly hitting on the inside.

Anyone have any advice on this issue? If I should not use the wheels I won't. I'd LIKE to dress the little guy up a bit since they are chrome, but I don't need problems. I can always sell the wheels to someone who needs toyota/chevrolet 6 lug 15 inch wheels.

More searching revealed a little more info, so I need to add to my original post.

It appears as though I mis-used the word "offset". I believe that the wheels I want to use have a 3 3/4" backspace. The 4" dimension is from the lug face to the outside edge of the rim.

Also, I would like to use the 235/75-R15 tires I now have on the Monty, at least until I wear them down a bit. I am open for size suggestions on the next tire purchase.

I am also open for lifting suggestions.

BUT, based on what you are saying those rims with standard tires should fit well since the 31's are so much bigger.

31's are my goal - I just need to get more miles out of the standard tires before I chunk them.

Thanks! Good drawing, but unfortunately it only shows how the wheels/tires relate to each other, not how they relate to the wheel wells. I'm still wondering if I can put the wider wheels on without having interference problems...

Those 235's sound skinny for am 8" rim. The areas where it hits is usually the bumper ends, and those metal pieces behind the headlight. Shouldn't be an issue with those tires. You step up to 31's and up, you'll need to watch those areas.

Thanks! I agree about the 8" rims and stock tires. I really wanted narrower wheels, but this is how it worked out. Eventually looking to go to larger tires and maybe even some sort of a lift - body or suspension.

With an 8" rim, assuming 3.5" to 4" backspacing, you won't have any issues rubbing with tires in the 9.5 to 12.5 inch range.

I had 32x11.5s that rubbed just a bit on the stock 6" wide wheels.
