Need a Spot
Just joined up, I picked up an ailing 91 Montero 4dr with the 3.0 and automatic. Eventually I want to put a diesel in it, but to start with I am going to get the v6 running properly so I can assess the rest of the vehicle. This is my first Mitsu, Jeeps have always been my thing. I'll have questions as I tear into it. Glad you guys are here!

Welcome. We have a few more friends in OR for you to meet.

You'll be pleased that some Jeep things...Aisin transmission and NP231...are compatible between the marques.

Also, compared to many Jeeps, the Montero is so much more beefy.

Body Damage is Cool
Hello jeep,
welcome to the forum. You may have seen me around in my Blue 1989 Raider. I've worked on it over the past 12 years and I've been in Hillsboro that entire time. Here is a tip for you. Put your vehicle information in your signature so as you ask Q's in the future, we can see what you have.

I've worked on that V6 several times and would be glad to meet you and share some general knowledge with you given the chance. Send me a Private Message and we can exchange contact info.

I'm glad to see another Gen I vehicle in Hillsburrito, hahaha. See you around.

Thanks for the welcome, guys! Jay, I haven't seen your rig around, at least I haven't noticed it. I just got into the Mitsu game after spending the last month looking for a Diesel powered early SUV. I checked out Isuzu, Toyota, Land Rover, and finally Mitsu. I have an '85 Isuzu Pup wit 87,000 original miles on it, and was looking in earnest for a Trooper. After thinking about it a while, I realized the Trooper would be a poor choice since they haven't made the 2.2 in forever, and there really isn't anything else they have that's available in the US. I didn't want to have to scrounge well worn parts to make repairs on what I have. After checking out the other SUVs available, I saw conversions to Diesel to be a very spendy option with the other guys. I started researching Mitsubishi and the availability of current Diesel engines that would slip into an early chassis made my decision. I found a 1991 Montero 4 dr in Salem OR for $600 and drove it home. It had a lot of valve clatter and the owner said cyls 2 and 6 had really low compression. I was able to maintain 60-65 mph on the freeway home with no overheating or other issues other than it wanted to die at the stoplights on the way to the freeway. I did dump a pint of Berryman's Chemtool in the oil and another in the gas tank so part of the rough running was from the highly volatile crankcase vapors being spewed into the intake right before the throttle body. I played with it some this weekend and it took an oil change to finally get rid of the valve clatter. The stuff that poured out was as black as coal. It's running a little better, but I still have some rough idle issues. I did a compression test before I did the oil change and the right bank was all 150 psi and the left bank was 80, 130, and 35 psi. I' will probably end up rebuilding or replacing this engine, but for now I'll putt it around and check out the rest of the vehicle.
