Thats a new trick I have never heard of. I travel a lot during the warm season. I drove from my home to WV yesterday. Got here last night. As I got near my destination I turned the wheel to turn not a road. When I went return the steering to center the steering wheel would not turn. I'm a thickly lad, and out of surprise & adrenaline I was able to strip or break or overcome the bind/lock.
It did this twice more on me as I navigated to a parking lot afraid to drive further.
I'm guessing it's the steering wheel lock in the column? Any body had this happen? Other ideas?

Its never happened to me. The only steering thing I've ever experienced is related to cold starts. When I first fire up the rig and go to pull out of my driveway, it feels really stiff for a split second but then the power steering kicks in.
Its consistent on almost every cold start.
89 Raider - V6, Automatic, rear LSD, A/C Retrofit, Cruise Control Retrofit.

Check your steering to see if anything is coming apart to cause a bind, Idler arm bent making contact with the frame, steering stops binding against eachother, any combination of steering link damage or super loose.
also check if one of your CVs is popping out of it's cup, that will cause a problem like you're describing. Check your steering shaft U-joints for play because if they drop out of the yoke half way you can't steer. Lastly check your power steering system, if you're driving with power steering and it suddenly stops pumping it can feel like it locked up just because it drops that load on you.

Something like that happened to me and it was a bad shock bushing causing the shock to move and then bind the steering.

I negated the steering column lock and it's still doing it at times. Thanks for the suggestions. Will check them all. Will take any & all suggestions. Thanks!

Holly cow, I happen tome once on my 1979 Toyota Corolla, talk about a white knuckle grip to the steering wheel and tight grip to the seat with your <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> and it happened while turning into a gas station from the highway in Puerto Rico.
I opened the hood and found a set of pliers stuck at the linkage near the fire wall.
