They're 'welded' to the channel in the valve cover...I was thinking of using a heat gun to soften them up. Any suggestions?

Very carefully go around the outside of the rubber with a razor, then kind of dig a chunk out. From there use a straight seal pick to gently spread the stamped steel under the gasket (the valve cover is upside down) lifting out the gasket. It's a pain but it can be done without damaging the valve cover.

So setting them on fire is not advised? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Ernest tried that but it warped the valve covers enough to be hard to seal.

A heat gun works really well, short of setting them on fire.

Used a heat gun and a thin flat-bladed screwdriver. Kind of a pain, but not too bad.
