There is a minty, 144k mile, 89 V6 5speed in my area on C-list. Going to look at it next Saturday. What should I look for as far as problems.

https://northmiss.craigslist.org/cto/5119765878.html

And the price is considerably less than asking

Thanks,
Norm

Find out what the work "already done" is. Look up your model at mitsubishilinks.com and check the service manual for the work that should of been done and make sure it has. As quick things to check, an updated crankshaft pulley bolt, plus has the timing belt and all that been taken care of?

I asked about tHe timing belt and he said the PO had kept very good records and had owned it since new. I had forgotten about the crank bolt! Will have to read up on the fix. We're the 5speeds weak in these? I seem to remember the auto being the popular choice. Any other issues with gen 1? Where to look for rust etc? This will share time with my motorcycle as daily driver, so dependability is a plus. Or I could get something more "reasonable" but I miss these trucks!

Fix for the crank bolt is to remove everything from the front of the engine and replace the bolt with a new updated one from your local dealer.

If the repairs from the previous owner are recent and from a dealer, then you may be able to confirm with the dealer if it was already done.

Auto's were popular because they were pretty bullet proof.

Other than the clutch replacements the manual transmissions were pretty decent too except when doing rock crawling. Then things can get interesting since the gearing isn't that great for that kind of wheeling.

As for rust, I'm not sure since I live in California.

Test drove it today. It has had a lot of sprucing up with rattle cans, the "work already done" referred to the welded on "nerf bars" and the roof rack. Guy knew very little about Montys and had been told by a dealer that they had a cult following and he should list it on c-list for an insane price and the buyers would show up. It was a solid $2700 truck that I offered $3500 for and he wouldn't take less than $4500. Did I mention the oil leak?
Anybody got a line on a two door? Or should I hang it up and look for a Bronco?

Looks like that import route is pricey. Hang in there with CL. Good ones pop up every now and then in bunches. Just might have to widen your area out like mudraider said.

Hell I might list one of mine if that crazy guy in MS can get 4500 bucks for his. My 87 Red 5 speed is running now according to my uncle that has been working on it. Ought to be worth at least a 1000 bucks maybe more.
