Hey everyone I have a 87 Montero Sport with it's original 2.6 gas engine. I would like it to have little more pine there is not to much info on these cars in terms of engine swaps. My question is, is there an engine that is a direct fit and legal in California. If so please respond any info would help .

4G64 2.4 from a mighty max or early Montero Sport if you want more power is what you're looking for, there are diesels too but $$$ they are however the simpler swap.

Answering your question directly, using the 2.4 as Toasty said, along with all of it's EGR stuff, and the 2.4 electronics, will bring a big smile to the government sniffers. Upgrading to FI instead of carb will make an easy inspection. Bonus for you will be better mileage and power, ease of finding issues as you'll be able to plug the ECU into a puter.

A turbo 2.6 from a Starion/Conquest is a fairly simple swap as well and has been well documented on this site.

California B.A.R. approved and was driven regularly until I chose my Ramcharger for more comfort. The 10-psi was extremely gratifying compared to the NA engine in my '87 Raider.

The 2.6 turbo obviously was able to pass emissions in the vehicles it originally came in, so there's no reason it wouldn't pass in another vehicle provided you swap over any emissions equipment with it as well. This would apply to any engine you choose to swap into your vehicle.

In Cali it is different you can't put a v8 in a montezy because the 87 style never came with one of the trim packages ome.. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That used to be incorrect. You could swap in newer anything as long as all EGR equipment for the engine was there. We used to talk with a dude from California on doing V8 swaps from Camaros into S-10's. Actually kind of a cool rule I think.
