So I have manual locking hubs on my Montero. I have an owner's guide that says that it has auto-locking hubs. Were auto-locking hubs standard or an option on the 1990? Did a previous owner switch them out on my vehicle? Also, occasionally when I am driving, the 4wd light comes on in the dash. Usually it will go off after I park and turn off the truck for a bit. It does come on when I put it in 4wd. Is that likely a sensor or a short, or something else. Not sure how to troubleshoot this.

Thanks,
Alex.

Manual hubs are an add on by a prior owner. Take them off and clean them well. Lightly regrease them. Old grease gets dirty and sticky. It will cause enough drag to activate the sensor. There are great videos on YouTube about servicing aisin hubs. All hubs are basically the same design so regardless of who built yours, the videos will get you thru.

Took another look. The Hubs are SuperWinch. Their website lists the hubs by vehicle, but don't list Montero as an option. They say not to use grease but lightly lubricate with SAE 30 oil, and to use a service kit to replace needed parts if you take them apart.
