Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just rebuilt the AW3 in the LS and as I was finishing up inside I noticed that 2 of the 3 studs for the shifter had disappeared! As many of you know, those aren't studs...

So, out she comes again and I pull the transfer shifter top plate off, there's 1 bolt, but of course under the other is a big hole looking down into the gears. Not such a good thing.

Long story short, I wound up having to take the rear cover off too, as the bolt found its way back and down to just inside the drain plug (wish I'd looked there first!).

Here's the problem: as I pulled the rear cover off of the Hi-Lo shaft, a little dowel fell on the floor. It's the interlock plunger, and the FSM says remove it when taking apart and install it when assembling. That's nice.

Where?!? I can't figure out where it goes. Any help?

Well, I had to go to the empirical data sorce and take the other transfer case apart. The interlock plunger sits between the two shifter shafts. It's a bit of a pain to install (actually a huge pain!), you have to pull the Hi-Lo shaft out of the case and slip it into the back cover while holding pressure on the plunger until you feel it engage the detent. Then you have to maintain the position of the shafts as you feed it back into the case, sliding it through the shift fork at the front and sliding the 2wd-4wd shafts into the rear cover until it passes the plunger.

Regarding the transfer shifter plate, well, a little judicious work with the mig and they're studs now!
