Remember a thread from back in the day about using axles from a Montero Sport to have get 4.90 gears.

Believe the thread said, use the axles out of the 2001 or newer but cannot remember what model.

I've searched but can not find the thread. Can anyone point me to the thread or explain the process.

Also, can the axles be straight swapped or do the just gears get moved.

To swap the complete housing you need the AWD housing, you can ID these by the AWD badge on the truck or the lack of a vacuum disconnect on the diff (no rubber boot thingy. Otherwise if you are just taking the gears they will work in any Gen 2 Montero with 8" diff.
