I've been smelling hot coolant in the cabin when the heater runs on high temp, and I'm wondering if a radiator stop leak would work in the heater box. Anybody with a specific product recommendation?

I don't recommend that type of additive. I do carry radiator stop leak as an emergency fix. Remember, once added to your cooling system, it does circulate throughout the entire system.

There is a high probability you have a hose connection problem that is allowing coolant to leak.

Heater cores are not a high failure item.
