Ok so why is it that every time I go into a tire store to get some quotes I tell them that I am thinking about two sizes for my tires 265/75/16 and 285/75/16. Then they give me a quote for some bull crap "allterrian" That is actually a street tire with allterrian stamped on the side. Then I ask for something more aggressive and I get the "you don't want that it'll ride too rough." Then I ask what do you have in a 285/75/16 and I always get "what you puttin this on?" I tell them the 4runner parked oustide and I usually get "ain't gonna fit," and I say "with a lift, it will i've researched it" and then I get "naw I ain't gonna let you do that to a nice truck like that." Or the "you don't really want to do that." Then there is the infamous "I wouldn't do that if I were you." But isn't that the point, I don't want my 4runner to be like everyone else's. Isn't their job to just answer my questions and tell me the price for the tires and not even give me their opinion? If I wanted to get their opinion on things don't they think I'd ask for it. Why can't there just be somebody out there that will just sell me a tire that I want and not give me their life stories and opinions on it.

Go into any tire store out here in AZ and tell them you want a 285/75/16 and all you'll get is BFG Muds or Goodyear MT/R's like everyone else? Cosco can even get you Bridgestone 285 MT's.

Must just be your location. You could mail order the tires, you know they'll fit.

Need I say more. There are probably more lifted trucks here than there are stock. The only thing is no one's ever seen a lifted 4runner. If I went in asking the same thing with a chevy or a ford or even a Tacoma they would all tell me how cool that would be and that they would recommend that. I don't really want to mail order tires because shipping is more than sales tax, but i will if I have to. I may even mail order me some of those trxus m/t. I really want Dueler M/t, but the trxus is about 20-30 bucks cheaper a tire.

First off, I'd go to another store that has more sense then these people.

But, if you must deal with this shop, I would CALMLY go back into the store and and tell them politely that you know exactly what you are doing, and you are prepared to deal with any rubbing issues and things like that. If that doesnt work, get loud. Tell them you know what you want, if not you will go elsewhere. Hell, print out a picture of one of the many 3rd gen 4Runners with 285's and show him.

yeah i've been meaning to take a picture into these places, but every store is like this. Maybe I don't have the right look to me. I bet if I walked in there wearing my camo and my huntin boots they'd talk differently. But the thing that ticks me off the most is that they say something like "I wouldn't lift it if I were you, then i say why and they say I just wouldn't" I can't stand IGGGGGnorant people. Oh well my brother's getting his tacoma lifted this week I haven't had a chance to talk to the guy that he ordered his lift from yet, maybe he'll be happy about the chance to lift his first 4runner.

Go to a place that will sell you a product and answer questions, not a place that will give you advice you don't want or need.

One Goodyear tire shop told me that MT/R's will only last 10k miles and they would rather sell me a Wrangler RT/S. I do not do business with that shop.

After my tires were on back order and then late, I found going in after work really helped them focus on the task at hand. There was something about a large, dirty, sweaty man telling them they had a problem to fix that seemed to really improve the service.

Maybe you should steal tires from them as punishment for being retarded.

Simple .... order them over the phone . Do not give any vehicle info ... and say you'll be in to make a deposit tommorow . Park next door and walk over .. pay and return to have them installed later .

The guys I deal with are great ... but they have little Toyota experience , and invariably look at my vehicle , and then the tire size I'm ordering and wonder , but have never questioned my judgement . With the Landcruiser , I simply said , I'm just following a tried and true template laid out by the LC community in the states ... cookie cutter .. they'll fit , don't worrrrry bout it

Cheers ,

i had the same problems with them. they wanted me to buy a 265 Dueler AT. i told them they were dumb and i wasnt looking for a puny AT tire, i wanted a 33" MT. i told them i knew it would fit and i wanted it. then i think they realized i would be spending an additional $100 for the 285 and MT, so i guess they convinced themselves to let me do it. i hate tire shops and dealers and retail off-road shops

Chitrod,
I like the camo idea. If you smear some dear or rabbit blood on it & your face you'll look more convincing. When I went home (Selma, AL) this Thanksgiving I was reminded of how much camo attire is such a major fashion statement. I agree with you on lifted 4Runners in Alabama. You might start a trend once you complete it though!
