It's been a long road the past few years since I retired from the Army. I bought a Montero to take to the oilfields, and the engine blew 5 months later. I never really had the time to deal with it, bought another car, drug the Montero back to TX with a tow bar, etc, etc. Fast-forward, I got divorced, found a wonderful woman, had a kid, and my Monty is sitting in the desert on someone's property waiting for me to do something with it. I don't have the time, space, or inclination to repair it (rod through block, likely warped and/or cracked head). I thought about getting a wrecked Blazer and doing a 4.3 swap, but I still don't have the time to worry about that.

What would be the interest level in parts off an 88 Montero? I can go very few days to pull parts, I can take detailed pis of what's there... I know the bouncy seat will likely be the first on the demands list. Is it worth my time to part it anymore?

It would be better sold whole, if still in otherwise good shape.

Common part sales will only net you a couple hundred bucks. By the time you've sold the bouncy seat, mirrors, and signal lenses, sometimes bumper ends, you'll have an eye sore and feel worse.

Sell it, part ways without further clean up.

If you have time. Selling parts on ebay will get you some extra $$$$$. That's what salvage yards are doing.

I'm not worried about an eyesore, its going to be parted out on my friend's property in the middle of the desert along the foothills of the Franklin Mountains, so it's out of sight, out of mind. I also can't get more than $300 for a non-running vehicle on a good day to the right buyer in this area.



This was my thought. I have the ugly custom bumper I made that fits an IBISTEK aluminum 17,500# military tow bar perfectly with welded-on 30,000# shackles that I could probably get a hundred for, plus another $250 for the matching tow bar (they go for $450+ used online), the bouncy seat, a couple lenses, gauges, the Weber 32/36 conversion, auto hubs, limited slip rear, working transmission and transfer case, etc. In the end, the junkyard will pick it up and pay me another $200 for the carcass.

I can keep it out there as long as I wish, but I was hoping to do the parting out during the summer break from school. This could supplant the loss of MGIB income for the summer break.
