What do y'all think, in a broad sense, of this engine? I'm looking at an older 2nd gen Trooper with high miles(over 100k). It sounds OK, but I don't know what to look or listen for.

BTW, I've done searches in both forums and only come up with the "ticking" reference that seems to start about 3,000 miles after an oil change. What's up with that? Sorry to sound stupid. All I've owned are 2.3's and 2.6's, both of which I think are bulletproof (with good maint.)

Thanks!

*EDIT*
DOH disregard this, your asking about the DOHC. I got the SOHC.

Engine wise I can't complain, however aftermarket mods are almost non exhistant. Not sure if thats the case on the 3.5 as well.

At least for the 2.8 there seem to be several mods available for increased HP.

I can say Ive got 72K (not very much) on my 96 but I drive it HARD change the oil reguarly and have 0 problems with the engine.

I have 167k miles on my 1994 3.2 DOHC. It uses almost no oil, and has no annoyances that I can think of.

Because of the nature of the lifters on the DOHC engines vs. SOHC engines, the DOHC engines aren't prone to the same ticking problems.

DOHC:

SOHC:

Notice the complex rocker arm system on the SOHC? That contains the hydraulic lifters, which can get dirty and cause the ticking sound. In the DOHC each cam sits right on top of the valve stems, with just a solid "shim" between the cam and the valve stem. Nothing to get dirty and possibly collapse.

There are a few more pics of 3.2 engines at:

don't kid yourself, the DOHC does tick. it has hydraulic valve lash adjusters, similar to lifters but not technically the same. shake a bush and twenty DOHC owners with ticking problems will fall out. having said that, most of us have had good luck flushing and running synthetic oils that in many cases have cured the ticking problems. i use mine to tow my 3,000# boat and my pop-up with no trouble. it's torquey and loves to run hard. many have had trouble with intake gaskets but apparently that's not too hard to fix either.

Snowrodeo - Not sure how your figure the DOHC 3.2/3.5 has hydraulic lash adjusters??? There's nothing at all hydraulic about them. They are a mechanical shim & bucket design that has to be adjusted manually.

My understanding was they put the 175 hp version in the Rodeo and base Troopers until 96 (the DOHC was an option in Troopers only from 92 to 95). Then all models got an upgraded 190 HP version of the SOHC 3.2 for 96 and 97. The first DOHC Rodeo was the 1998 205 hp version.

Might be wrong though, memory sucks lately. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

At least in the Trooper, a DOHC engine was optional in at least 92 and 94. I'd guess 93 as well, but I haven't seen one. I know 92 and 94 because I have a 94 and my dad has a 92.

They are rated at 190HP.

Like Paul E. says, they souped up the SOHC 3.2 a bit in the mid 90's bringing it up from 175 to 190hp. Any pre '98 DOHC 3.2L in the USA is news to me.
