Ok folks I just got back late last night from towing DougHs Montero that lost a tie rod end back from upstate ny on a flatbed trailer. Here are a few notes:

o Always remember to check the Tire Pressure of the trailer from uhaul
o 6600lbs + is easily doable with a stock driveline of the trooper at 60-65mph, don't know why anyone wants a supercharger for these rigs
o OME springs and Rancho 9000 shocks help imensely
o Hidden Hitch also performed flawlessly

Just as an FYI -- I do believe the stock clutch in the 98+ Amigo/Rodeo (very similar power to the Trooper you're referring) isn't quite up to speed on towing that kind of weight all that far. Perhaps the engine is up to the task, but the clutch is a little weak for that... I know this isn't completely related since it's a completely different tranny, but worth noting since it's a similar power setup engine-wise...

The braking system isn't really up to the task of towing that much weight if there are no trailer brakes. Towing with basically the same brake setup (Amigo vs. Trooper) and about 1000 lbs LESS meant a whole lot of brake fade without trailer brakes...

I have to agree to Chris. Be careful with a trailer without brakes. I have a pop-up trailer and completely loaded this thing weighs about 2000lbs. This rig has no brakes. It is a small trailer but I already got in the situation where I had to do an emergency stop. I was really glad that nobody was directly in front of me.
It was a shock for me because I was only used to trailers with excellent surge brakes. You did not even notice a diffence with the trailer because the brakes were so strong.
I would not recommend towing heavier trailer without brakes. Pulling is fine, but stopping ....
My next camping trailer will have brakes again, no matter how light it is .....

By the way in Germany the Trooper is rated from Isuzu to tow about 7700lbs (3.5t) with brakes on the trailer and about 1650lbs (0.75t) without brakes on the trailer.

I don't think it's just Germany the troopper is rated to tow over 7k lbs , I think it's everywhere other than the U.S.A.

Does the troop offer 4-wheel disc brakes on all their trim levels? I know for the Rodeo, in 2000 only the 4wd had the front and rear discs.

All Isuzus have had 4-wheel disc brakes since at least 97.

Yes I only towed one trailer over 2000lbs once w/o brakes and never again will I do it, even though in NYS you can tow w/o brakes up to 3500lbs. The Uhaul did have brakes, and darn good ones too! I once dolly towed a SAAB and it was horrible trying to stop that thing!

I was just glad to help out DougH darn kids always getting into trouble! hee hee!

All Rodeos with the rear D44s had discs (this means all 2nd gens and some 1st gens). 2nd gen Amigo's got rear discs. And i don't think Troopers picked up rear discs till their 3rd gen.

As for the uhaul flat bed, the one i rented to tow my broken Rodeo back from KY, it didn't have trailer brakes, only hydralic brake-away (not to be confused with hydralic surge brakes).

can an Isuzu tow 5000+ lbs? sure, i've done before as well with my Rodeo. Would i make a habit of doing so? Absolutely not. As chris mentioned, the transmission would be my biggest concern, not the engine. I know i've take a few years life off my clutch with some of the towing i've done. And not to mention the Trooper/Rodeo just doesn't have the shear weight of a fullsize truck for towing the heavy loads.

And as a side note, when towing any heavy load close to (in this case over) the towing capacity of Trooper, trailer brakes are definitely a necessity! 6600lbs is well over what the Trooper itself weighs, excepting it to stop with such a load in an emergency would be asking for a miracle.
