I have been looking for a LWB for some time now. Was initially looking Gen II, but I may be able to get a good price on a '90 LWB LS with 135k. It is LS, with V6, and manual trans. The AC does not appear to be working. Only saw it once briefly, and I think there was a little rot by the rear wheel wells. The owner does not know much about the car, and I will not be able to see it till next week. Told me to make an offer. The person is a work aquanitance, so I would be embarrassed to STEAL it from them, but how low can I reasonably go? Thanks, as I would like to get this soon before the MRS. changes my mind. Thanks in advance, Ted.

If it doesn't smoke and it's in good shape inside and out, I'd offer him $1500. If the rust is bad and the engine smokes, I'd offer him $1000. If he loves the truck, he might be offended, but those numbers are realistic. A cherry southern montero with those kind of miles is going for $2-2500 right now and that is with no rust and in great shape... no smoke.

Thanks, I was thinking 1500 also, but did not know for sure. Now I just have to convince the wife that we should keep the Raider. Four cars for the two of us is just right . I'll let you know next week. I hope they don't want 3750, as that would mean no new truck for me. One more question, what can you tow with the manual trans? Thanks for the replies, Ted.

Are you asking the towing capacity of the Montero with manual transmission or are you asking about towing the Montero with a manual transmission? I'm not sure about the former, but for the latter, you don't have to pull the rear drive shaft to tow it. Just put the tranny in neutral and tow away. You have to pull the rear drive shaft on the automatic transmission Monteros since there is no way to truly put it in neutral.

Funny how you always know exactly what you want to ask, but don't give the rest of the world all the info. Yes, I was curious as to the tow capacity of the Monte with the manual. Really up on the fence on this, I need the LWB for family duty, but LOVE the SWB for playtime. Decisions, decisions... Thanks, ted.

Even with a Vehicross in the driveway. I would give up on the new 4 door before selling your Raider. (just my two cents...)

Factory rated tow capacity for '90 LWB Monty V6:
No trailer brakes: 1500 lb gross weight, 150 lb on hitch
Electric brakes on trailer: 4000 lb gross weight, 250 lb on hitch
Most sources recommend not exceeding 75% of rated capacity which would be 1125 lb no trailer brakes, 3000 lbs with electric brakes on trailer.
However, many of us have exceeded these ratings. My '90 LWB manual tranny tows a utility trailer made from an old datsun pickup bed and chasis. Have towed over 2 tons of boulders with no trailer brakes. However, would not recommend this as a normal practice, especially at highway speeds on hills.
Good luck with the '90 LWB, you will love it!
90 LWB RS: 3 L/mt, JBaker springs, bushings, swaybars. KYB shocks tweaked, 134k mi, original owner. 97 LWB SR: SOLD Sep. 2014 131,006 mi: running boards removed, BFG 31x10.5 AT/KO tires, Air locker, AirLifts, KYB shocks, Cibie fogs, 3rd owner.

Well, picked the Montero up tonight for a one day test drive. SOme good, some bad. It was not a daily driver, has bad shocks, bad tires, a pull to the left while braking, small body rot, and the sunroof is broken. I tried to use the switch, and the motor made sound, the glass jiggled, but nothing. Since it's raining wanted to get out and check it was realy sealed. To my surprise realised some previous owner siliconed around the perimeter, effeftively gluing it shut. Is this reversible? It is an LS, with AC, power, bouncy seat and headlight washers. LSD??? It seems taht way, but i won't know till tomorrow. Interior is in average shape, seat covers very thin, eevn compared to my Raider. Trans seems smooth, and low clatter at cold goes away when warm. Valve guides, but that doesn't bother me much. Nedd to make an offer tomorrow. Sorry for the essay, but thought it may help with a price guess.
Thanks again, Ted.

Sounds like a real fixer-upper! Are you sure you're up for the task? It's an addiction once you get started...
Plan on overhauling the brake system. It will probably be close to needing new rotors/calipers if they weren't properly cared for. Sounds like it's been in the rust belt so you'll need to replace brake hoses, flush brake system, etc.
Check the frame really well to make sure it is not rusted through anywhere. (especially toward the rear of the truck)
Just to prepare you... you'll drop at least $4k in parts and labor on this truck in the next year if you plan on making it into a daily driver. If the engine or heads go, add $1.5k to $3k on top of that. If you plan to do it all yourself, it will be less.
I wouldn't spend more than $1500 to get this truck. Pick it over with a fine tooth comb and show the owner a list of what you're going to have to do to put it back into daily driver status.
