Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, pulled the trigger on a '90 LWB LS tonight. Spent $1750 but it needs some work. New shocks, and some brakes, but on a whole seems real tight. Only problems other than the aforementioned are the cruise does not seem to work, and the sunroof is siliconed shut. Seems two owners ago, something must have leaked, and instead of fixing it right, they gooped it shut. Motor runs, but I'm not sure what would happen if I tore out all the goop. How expensive/time intensive is the fix?

Ordering some new KYB's as per everyones recommendation here, 32's go on Saturday, brakes fixed next week.

I managed to talk my sister, who lives three blocks from me, to buy the Raider cheap, to appease the wife, on the condition I can use it as I need . Life is good.

Anything else I need to know that is a LWB manual tranny issue? If yes, let me have it

It looks like it's time to change that signature line.

What a deal. You "sell" the Raider. But, still keep driving privileges.

It's probably a good idea to change all the fluids (oil, A/T, diffs, transfer case and water). Check the condition of the belts. Check the crank bolt!!! If it's the old style, think about changing it. How many miles on it? Is it due for a new timing belt (and water pump)?

It's pretty sweet to see two Montys in the driveway, isn't it?

I've dropped the whole sunroof assembly out one time. It's really not that hard, just time consuming. The real PITA was getting all of the interior trim off without breaking it (I broke a couple of pieces anyway). Once you get the headliners out the sunroof is held in with 10-15 litlle bolts around the perimeter. The whole thing can then be taken out of the truck. Oh, BTW, it's not light either, get some help taking it out. Once it's out, the first thing I'd do is make sure the drains are free and clear, then worry about the sunroof itself. it's really possible that one, or both, of the drive cables are bad and the previous owner had a daughter who opened the sunroof despite Mom and Dad telling her not to. Oh sorry, I digress.

Good luck, and welcome to the Multi-Monty club.

Let me ask you a few questions to help you diagnose the problem.

Questions:

Does the light on the combo switch turn on?

...If it does turn on then power is being supplied to the combo switch.
...If not, then there are two possibilities. Either there isn't any power or the led is no longer any good. But lets just assume that the LED wouldn't fail for now.

If power is being supplied to the combo switch, then I would suspect your Cruise Control Unit/Brain. You can easily access this Cruise Control Unit and unmount it. Once you unmount it open it up and look at the circuitry. You will easily be able to tell if it is burned out, or in good condition. If it is burned, replace it. If it is good, check the connections on the following 4 places:

Break switch:
Cruise Control switch: (2 harnesses)
Cruise Control Servo:
Cruise Contorl Unit:

Also take a look at the following thread, it might help you diagnose what is wrong with your Cruise. There is a PDF document on the Cruise Control system, and a wiring diagram.
How to Retrofit a 1991 Cruise Control system into any Gen 1.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thanks all for the warm welcome, and all the advice. The truck has 136k, and runs like a top. I can't wait to see how it goes without the front right caliper clamped to the rotor. No smoke on start, just nice clean running. Has low idle though, only 600 or so rpms.

The cruise does have the light on the stalk , but nothing hapens when I push the button to set it. The sunroof will have to live glued shut for a while.

The 32's are already on it, and new tires are being sought for the Raider. Previous owner had 225/70 15's on this pig. Scary stuff. Well, enough for now, but I'm sure I'll have more to talk about soon.

DougH, when is the next trail ride???

Thanks as always, Ted

Ted, what kind of sunroof? Is it the electric sliding roof, or a pop up?
