Out yesterday doing mostly freeway driving and noticed that after running around for about an hour I heard a ticking that, because it seemed to vary with the speed sounded like the speedo cable. But further observation identified that it was a ticking between 2,600 and 3,000 rpm. So as I ran through the gears it would occur on and off. After cold start this am no ticking.

Has anyone heard of this? (no pun intended)

I get this too. I wasn't sure if it was the speedo or the tach. It went away, then came back. In fact, I had it come and go a few times (10 or 12 times). It is not there now (gone for at least 9 months) so I have not done anything.

In order to eliminate the spedo I stopped the truck and requested my wife bring the engine to 2,600 rpm and it was evident, I lifted the bonnet and listened to the engine carefully so as to eliminate a valve tap or a heat shield which might vibrate at a certain frequency. It sounded like it was comming from the firewall area.

The whole thing makes no sence because the tach recieves pulses from the ignition coil.....right?

Goofy, but since it stopped it's hard to diognose.

Actually, I believe that each one of these trucks has developed it's own personality in the last ten years or so.

We have a 91 Montero and I do remember that clicking noise from the dash that would only be between certain rpm's. One day I was in a bad mood and it started making the noise, so I smashed the dash really hard with my fist. It never made the noise since for the last 100,000 miles. It is definately coming from the tac though. there must be something under there that is rotating along with the tac signal from the coil. We also had another kind of clicking noise that was significantly different from the tac noise. This was from the Speedo. This is just an on and off thing, but I never looked into it. both will make noises though from time to time. with 200000 miles on our monty my speedometer probably needs lubrication or something. maybe its getting worn out and noisy. I just turn the radio up louder and i don't hear it.
