Need a Spot
I have a 1994 Montero SR, V6,3.5, DOHC, with Rear Differential Lock.
I am not certain if ,my rear differential is LSD or not. Is it okay to use LSD gear oil on a non-LSD differential? Will there be some risk/damage?Thanks in advance.

The lsd additive in the oil makes the lsd behave much better on the street, but it wont effect a non lsd diff. On the other hand if you do have an lsd you dont want to run plain gear oil on the street.

kiks, I recenly posted about changing the Rear LSD fluids. I have a 1989 Dodge Raider with Rear LSD. It's probably a little different then what you have equiped on your 1994 Montero but the principal is the same.

Jay, why the 85W-140? My 89 manual says to use 80W-90. Not to argue with your logic, I'd like to know how it's working out. I'm a firm believer in heavier oil, up to a point. Since I'm going to change the oil in both diffs and the T/C I'd like to get your feedbback on this one before I do it.

I can't exactly recall the reason I went and purchased the heavier weight. I think it had to do with the temperature climate here in Western Oregon. But I made that desicion a while back ago. As soon as I put it in I felt a really big difference. I can't believe all of the little things I've done to it to make it run better. It is almost a whole new truck from when I purchased it last October.

This weekend is the real test, tonight I will be driving my Raider with the new fluid in it for 4 hours non stop to get to eastern Washington state. Then on Sunday I will be driving back agian 4 hours non stop. So I'll have a better report for you on Monday. I'll post the results on the other thread: 3.0 Raider - LSD oil change (pics)

Suprisingly, there has been a lot of people on the message board doing the diff fluid lately. So, I'm sure a lot of you who have read these similar posts here on this message board will realize that I've been linking to my thread every chance I get. I just can't say enough about how well it has worked for me.

Like I said, so far - 1 weeks worth of city driving it has been really great! I will post on Monday about the performance on the 500 mile round trip I will be taking this weekend in the other thread.

It might not have the syncroniser and it might be OK to use GL5 differential oil in it, But if its gen 2 that have shift on the fly you would need GL4 or it would not fuction properly.

Don't use anything but GL-4 in a Gen I transfer case! This has been batted around and I have read through all of the threads on this...

For Gen I users, here is a great gear oil for front diff, transfer case and rear open diffs. It is for services GL-3, GL-4, GL-5.

If you have an LSD rear diff, use this combo. One additive bottle first and fill it the rest of the way with gear oil.

If you don't ride your horse in the creek often, you might want to go with synthetic oil. Here is what I would put in front and rear open diffs.

If you like to get your Monty wet a lot, don't go with the synthetics... you'll be blowing a wad if you do since you should replace these fluids and tranny fluid after any deep fording. You should also grease, grease, GREASE the zerks as well.

If you have a wad to blow, you should be buying a Don's bumper, Don's *NEW* ezfit rocker skids and a safari snorkel!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
