Montero SR, 1994 V6,3.5cc, Automatic Transmission. The Check Engine Light comes on during downhill and engaged in lower gear for engine brake. After about 1 hour of driving on even roads, light goes out. This does not happen on uphill roads and flat roads. Please advise on what I should check out first. The new sensors I have replaced are the Oxygen Sensor and the Engine Coolant Temp. sensor. The problem keeps appearing again. Thanks in advance. Frank

I would start by getting the code from the ECU and see what it says.

Might be a coolant sensor...
or a O2 sensor....it might be cooling down too much and producing that error also...

Or an injector leaking under very high manifold vacuum, if the code is for excessive richness, but I don't know the code sceme for this engine.

Could a defective intake plenum gasket be the culprit? The former owner told me that he replaced the spark plugs, had to take out the plenum. He did not use a new gasket for the plenum. Could this be it?

kiks,
There are a lot of things it could be including the whole computer (in my case) You really need to pull the code before you proceed any further. Otherwise, you will be totally shooting in the dark...
