Recently someone posted a photo of their Garmin GPS III+ mounted above the rearview mirror. I want to do the same thing but canÆt find the photo. They had wired it into the map lights. Anyone remember the post??

I'm sure you can use the standard gpsIII mount and stick it to the windshield. Wiring it would be the easier part. Then again you could make yourself a little shelf that attacheds via the mirror's mounting screws and put the gps in there then mount the mirror to the shelf unit.

[ February 20, 2003, 07:42 PM: Message edited by: off-roader ]

If you put the GPS under the steel roof, it can't see the satellites, because reception is lin-of-sight, and all you have is a fancy clock. You 'll either need an external antenna or dash mount it.
I am now the proud owner of not one, but two Magellan 4000XL power/data/antenna modules, one of which I've modified to be power/data only, because otherwise the internal antenna is disconnected and you can only use the GPS with an external antenna, which I don't own. I now no longer am responsible for Energizer's entire bottom line, and the bunny will starve. These things are interesting. You can pull GPS power off a computer if you use a voltage doubler chip gizmo to take the computer's serial port 5v to 10v, or you can split the unterminated cable into the wires for the serial connector and the wires for auto (or boat) 12v.
For my money, the best place for a gps in the Monty is between the main instrument console and the center pod.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

this work good for me, it`s a Meridian Magellan in an old cellular holder with the power/data cord on it

heheh... I stuck my GPS to the side of the speedo cluster "pod" with commercial-grade velcro. Unfortunately, every hour or so it starts to fall off when 4-wheeling. Doesn't fall off on the highway.
(it's one of the older square Magellans - MAP330 - damn good GPS for the money - but doesn't support external antennae)

Pic's of my Etrex mount location. The power comes up from behind the instrument cluster and is nearly invisible to the passengers...

Velcro adhesion here, too. Right betwixt the two center vents on the dash face. Hits the floor occasionally, but good otherwise.
I alternately use the cellphone holder for the etrex when bouncing about offroad (cellphone gets thrown on the backseat or floorboard, lol).
