Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'll fall flat on my face if anybody can shed light on this question. Are the internals of the 86-87 Trooper TD 5 speed gearbox the same as the 4 cyl gasoline gearbox? I know the housings are different but what about the widgits inside? Has anybody out there rebuilt a 5 speed?
86 Trooper TD
85 Pup diesel (known by my friends as an Isuzu Poop)

Isuzu Poop! <hehehe> Good one,Steve! Nope,I have no clue, but I'm curious what you're cookin up there in the commonwealth....
Out in the rockies,I'm pondering the feasibility of 33x9.5x15 rubber. the 31's are a little wide and I had to adjust the steering stops to stop frame rub. I'm thinking I may have to do a body lift for the 33's. I better post on the main board to see if it will fly...

I do not know for sure. Many people consider the gas burner transmission marginal in durability. Four cylinder diesels are very hard on transmission due to the torgue pulses. I do not know anyone that has problems with the diesel transmission. With these thoughts in mind I doubt seriously many parts are interchanable. We could check a parts book.

While I have the engine out was thinking about giving the gearbox a rebuild (200K on it) but folks have been telling me that parts for the diesel 'box are impossible to find. I've heard of several Trooper TD's with bad tranny's. Because I'm a glutton for punishment I'll probably do it anyway, mainly because I hope to drive this car for many many years.
Cruiserman - I'm curious about the parts book you scored. Where did you get it? How much was it? Is it like a dealer microfishe? How about a part number for a piston and a con rod for the 2.3TD. (I'm trying to find parts sources overseas) Thanks!
I drove a 73 Land Rover for years (talk about punishment) a vehicle that is also cursed with 15" wheels. I searched for ages for tall narrow tires. You CAN find 235 85 15 tires if you look hard enough. If you search on Rover sites for tire info I'll bet you find advice in the search for the elusive tire size. (The rest of the world runs 16" rims, even Rovers, only the USA uses 15" for light trucks).

They are both used and in good shape, and I paid a crap load for them. I was told they are out of print. Reach Faxon at 800-458-2734 in Riverside, CA. The manuals are soft-back books. Even the dealer doesn't have microfiche or CDROM for this year.
Let me look for the connecting rod part number. Be aware that it's going to be the original part number as the books are from 1986 . . .
From p-33 of the camshaft section of the parts manual, the push rod is listed as part number 5-12575-015-0. The tappet is listed as 9-12571-801-0.
EricM

------------------
'60 FJ25
'85 Toy 4x4
'86 TD Trooper II
'93 FZJ80
